Looking for jobs in Oz
We are making the move to Oz sometime towrds the end of next year, maybe sooner depending on the house sale etc....
Is it too early to be searching for jobs in Oz? Do you think that i should be distributing my CV to prospective employers and employment agencies?
The other issue id that we are a little unsure where we want to live but have possible narrowed it down to the Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast and Brisbane areas.
Any advice would be greatly received.
Thank you
Rob

what is it that u do for a living - i am in perth and depends on what u do to how many jobs are going - but i have been looking at brisbane - workwise and there seems heaps of opportunities - different here in oz - when u apply for a job its a case of 'come in tomorow for an interview ' and the next day jobs gone - seem much more relaxed here semi informal interviews
unless u go for a job with government - which i do at mom and it took them 6 weeks to give me an interview and a further 7 weeks to offer job - soooooo laid back

Im an engineering planning administrator but my skills that are being assessed is Sheet Metal Worker (First Class)
I am in an office based job at the moment which i quite enjoy doing.
I have been considering trying something totally different when we get to Oz. An estate agent is one job that i wouldn't mind doing. Just want to keep my options open and not to restrict myself in one area of work.

had the same reaction as worzel - even when we were in Oz one agency had a chat but was not really interested until we had the visa. Contacting suitable companies directly was the same re visa if they did get back.
One v good possible job (within company Mr W works for) did come up but due to circumstances we were not ready to make the move just yet. However we have kept details just incase they don't fill the position or that person leaves. With this in mind I would certainly look at job ads keeping details and if a job comes up that is just 'you', you have got nothing to lose with a targeted approach.

I understand that, complete change and all that. But also understand this. Whatever new career you are planning to change to, there will be people already doing it here. Trained, qualified, experienced people.
As I said before (http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=265851)if you are considering making a complete career change, think how difficult it would be to do it in the UK. It will be harder here. They prefer local qualifications and experience.
Cheers,

I think my first decision is whether to go for Melbourne / Sydney where there is lots of work in my areas but I don't fancy the big city life style / commute options. But I think most of the other state capitals etc are much the same with a few subtle variations (Brizzie strong on extraction industries, Adelaide for wine / manufacturing etc). So having eliminated Melbourne / Sydney it is a lifestyle choice between the other big cities then just see what happens when I get there.

I am an Engineer, try these web sites to look for jobs in the location you are looking to live. You can then see what prospects there are. I wouldnt bother applying for Jobs until you are in the country. I is a good idea though to e-mail your C.V/resume to the most prominent job agencies in the area you want to move to. You will be able to find this out by looking at the web sites below.
Good Luck
