Hi was just wandering if anyone could answer a query relating to long term sick pay.......am unable to find anything other than the norm appears to be between 10 and 15 days.

Can anyone let me know if Australia do offer long term sick scheme via employers as some do in the uk? If not can anyone advise what would happen?

There is a sickness allowance available through centrelink, however you need to be a PR resident for 2 years to be entitled to it (some exceptions apply).

When I retired last year I had well over a year of sick leave accrued - which I, of course, lost when I quit. Generally you accrue about a couple of weeks every year and that usually builds up year after year so if you get really sick you can use up as much as you have accrued.

Different postions/companies offer different employment benefits.

A typical office worker in NSW or Vic may get 8 days paid sick leave in the first year of employment, and then one extra day up until a total max of 14 days.

Other occupations may offer 30 days paid sick leave as standard from year one. I have been an employee in both situations.

I'm a nurse and get 80 hours sick pay a year which carries over if you dont use it. This was something that really worried me when I first came over. All it takes is a small accident, break a leg, and no wages! I have taken out a payment protection policy, as has my husband. At least this way we are sure of our wages if either of us is ill. A lot of the girls I work with have payment protection policy's too.

hi tracie, can i ask how much you pay for this? this worries me as well, especially as money is a little 'tight' at the moment

Not Cheep! I think it's about pay $140 per month but thats including my Life insurance policy as well. It's also tax deductible. It depends on your occupation as well, apparently nursing is one of the most expensive ones as a lot of nurses go off sick with back injury's I still think it's worth it for peace of mind.

Hi All thanks for all your replies. No am not planning on sick leave. However would just like to know how things work as my OH has had cancer before (in remission - hopefully never to return!) just obviously have to look at finances very carefully in the future. Would like to know what would happen in his case. Thanks again.
