Default Long Term Motor Home

We have a friend who is coming over to Aus and wants to spend about 3-4 months travelling round the country in a motorhome. There are four of them, two adults and two kids. They are then going to go off to NZ for a few weeks and want to do the same thing.

Would they be better going for a long term rental with one of the big companies or looking to buy a second hand one and sell it back later? They are selling the house in the UK and are going to use some of the money for a long term holiday so there would be the money if buying/reselling was a better option.

I have looked at the likes of Maui and they will combine rental time in Aus and NZ so you don't pay two lots of insurance.

Any thoughts, gratefully accepted.

I know someone who did this about 11 years ago - and buying is definately a more financially astute option - even cheapo clapped out bangers can be sold off when they go back to the uk (usually at the backpackers van auctions - do they still have them?)
