Re: long holiday

ETAs give a three month stay, but only apply to certain nationalities (British
citizens included) and can only be applied for offshore.

Short stay tourist visas are the standard visa equivalent of ETAs.

There's also a long stay tourist visa for visits of (depending on circumstances) 6-12
months. However, you would need to have special circumsyances to get a full 12 month
stay in Australia, not least showing you can support yourself without working.

There are also a couple of other tourist visa classes, including medical treatment
and sponsored family visitor. These are not commonly used by British people.
