Lonely Teenage Kids in Brisbane
Can anyone help ? We arrived in Brisbane 5 weeks ago and our 17 year old daughter is missing her social life, friends e.t.c. Well she has a couple of pets but I guess they don't talk back !!
If there is anyone out there in a similar position or willing to help out please reply. We also have 15 year old son in similar position though he has already started school so has achieved contact with people of his age outside of the home !!! A sad plea I know, but if you can help please get in touch. Cheers. Pete

I am assuming she is not going to school. How about getting enrolled in TAFE short courses, volunteering at a youth group or a youth community organisation. How about finding out about community radio http://www.4zzzfm.org.au/ and Bris 31 TV http://briz31.tv/news.asp
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298077 for posts I found.
Contact Rotary to find out where are the closest Rotaract clubs for young people. My daughter (20) is a member and my other daughter (16.5) who is too young for Rotaract, attended the Rotary RYLA camp - brilliant. She cannot wait for the other camps which are all great for character and friendship building. http://www.rotary9600.org/D9600clubs.htm
Maybe http://www.riverbendreaders.com.au/ may need her help.
Canteen: http://www.canteen.org.au/index.cfm?pid=3&pageid=78 become a volunteer
http://www.backbone.org.au/ - youth arts
http://www.reachout.com.au/home.asp - youth support
http://www.volunteeringqueensland.org.au/
RIDING FOR THE DISABLED ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND
PO Box 904, Kenmore, QLD 4069
Ph. (07) 3720 2345 Fax (07) 3720 1457
Email: [email protected] - on the Gold Coast, they are always looking for helpers, which are usually teenage girls. Brisbane may offer the same.
If you PM me, I will give my daughter's hotmail address so they can chat on messenger. Let me know what she likes, just in case they are not well matched otherwise a waste of time.
Hope some of this helps.
Gayle

Re: Lonely Teenage Kids in Brisbane
Thanks for your replies and advice. Yes it is a little tough to start over. We came here with open minds and having moved around a lot, knew what we could expect. It helps having a more permanent home now (moved in last week) start to feel more settled. The dog arrived from Quarantine on Saturday which made a huge difference to how we were all feeling, so now just another 5 weeks for our container to arrive and we can have chairs to sit on as well !!
Shelley has interview for Part time job today so finger crossed, David has enjoyed a week of work experience and is now enjoying another 2 weeks off school. Shelley is enrolled in a 2 year TAFE course starting in February, and will hopefully find some short courses to do over the next few months.
