Helloh Leicester girl

I sort of qualify as an East Midlands girl (bit old for that) (lived in Northampton for 12 years), but I'm moving to Adelaide later this year. Don't know whether this helps, but I gather that Unley (or was it Ulney) High School is the second best secondary in Australia. Quite an expensive catchment, but once the kids are in you can always move somewhere cheaper!

Flinders University has a specialist Science/Maths School and Brighton High School is a specialist Music School (both free).

Hope this helps for the future

Er, no way . I don't know where you got that from, it's one of the better state schools in Adelaide for sure, but Brighton, Marryatville, and Glenunga definitely beat it out of the state schools.

She also likes clubs, dancing etc. as she was at university in Liverpool where there is a good nightlife. Do you know any teachers out there, who could give us info, as she is concerned she would have to do her PGCE out there again, and not be able to teach straighaway. She is also woried about making friends, you know all the natural things you worry about!! Thanks Helen
Hi Helen,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I usually get an email telling me when someone's replied to a post (maybe I turned that option off when I 'gave up' BE in April '04 ).

My boyfriend's sister is a teacher, and his mum is a principal here in Adelaide, if your daughter would like to email me then I could forward it on.

I didn't find it too hard to make friends when I first moved here because my bf is from Adelaide, and since then I have picked up my own friends. I think with a warmer climate it can be easier to socialise and make new friends.

N

P.S. someone asked about Marryatville surrounds - very nice, Eastern suburbs, near Norwood.

Hi Nara,
Thanks for getting back to me, we are off to Australia House on Saturday for a family information day re South Australia Police, we haven't got a date yet, I'm not so sure they know what they are doing at the mo, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. I will get my daughter Nicky, to E.mail you soon. We have downloaded quite a lot of info re teaching in S. Australia.

Better to move to:

1. Perth
2. Melbourne
3. Brisbane
4. Sydney
5. Hobart
6. Darwin
7. Adelaide

This is coming from someone who is an Australian.

I wonder what your specific reasons are for this?? I'd be very interested to know.

They both have nice surrounds, both near the city but in opposite directions, Brighton is southern and 2 mins walk from the beach, and Marryatville is northern and isn't near the beach. They both have excellent music departments, there isn't much to pick between them. Brighton probably has the better choirs, but their orchestras and bands are on a similar footing. They're the two schools that sweat it out in all the music competitions while the other schools are content with third place and down lol. Both have classical and jazz departments.

Most Australians I know (myself included) would rank Darwin, Hobart, and Canberra as their lowest places -- they're the minor capital cities . Not that they're not nice places though.
