Has anyone heard of or used LETS either in the UK or here in Australia?

Not entirely but that's an interesting scheme nonetheless. The Bartercard system is geared more to the providers than the general public consumer, more B2B. There is also a tax liability.
The aims and objectives of the LETS-style systems are not profit driven but act as social welfare networks which are proven to regenerate communities.
