HI Everyone

My husband and I are moving out to Townsville from the UK on 27th December. Would love to meet any English expats etc, share ideas, areas to live etc!
We do have ozzie friends living in Vincent townsville and on Maggie Island.
Any suggestions for good schools(Not private) would be a bonus and decent suburbs to live in.
It would be lovely to socialise with other expats we have a 7yr old girl and 13 mth old boy.

Also any ideas for nursery / daycare for my 13mth old?

Sorry for all the questions etc.

Can people let me know how it is like travelling from Townsville back to Britain.

Am being offered a good job there but worry it will be too much travel for my toddler if I want to visit Britain on a holiday. I plan to holiday at least once a year!!

Am being oferred a gr8 job in TV. However I know it takes a 2 hr flight to get to a major city. Is there anyone living in TV from this forum and do you experience a sense of loneliness and isolation?

Do people living in Townsville find there is much to do given how far away a big city like Brisbane is? Am asking bcos I am insure if I should take up a job in Townsville that I love or a job in Perth that is ok?

From Townsville, you are probably going to have to get to Brisbane or Sydney for an international flight to the UK, or even from the Gold Coast now you can get as far as south east asia for releativley competitive fares. Although having said that I think Cathay fly into Cairns so that may be another option. Depending on the airline and the routing, the flight would be a minimum of 22-24 hours.

Hi a few years back I commuted to Europe from Townsville every 8 weeks for just over a year before relocating back to middle Europe after 7 years in TVL.It was easy enough. As mentioned already there are various options available. Through experience my preference was to fly to Brisbane and then onwards with Singapore airlines on the A330 & A380 (7.30 hrs +13hrs) or with Etihad via Brisbane - Singapore A330 (7.30hrs) - Abu Dhabi A340 (7hrs) - A340 UK (7hrs) and Etihad via Sydney direct Abu Dhabi A340 (14hrs!!) - Uk (6.30hrs) A330.
So after about 6 trips a year I think 1 trip back a year would be OK even with a toddler.
My choice of carrier was driven by mainly by the seat configuration; I prefer the 2/4/2 (e.g A330 & A340 & A380 upstairs - now changed) as opposed to the 3/4/3 ((e.g B777 (Emirates) & B747 (Qantas BA etc)).
As an aside the cost of living is quite high in Oz these days. In Townsville you need to be prepared for a very hot and humid lifetsyle (pool highly recommeded). So I would hope the job is well paid (A$100K +) to make the move worthwhile

Thank u both for ur replies.... Yes got a good offer with govt... Over 200k .... Does Townsville feel isolated... A friend in Darwin old me he feels locked in sometimes.

Don't know about Townsville but I live in Darwin and have never felt isolated or locked in

Every one feels differently though so there's no definitive answer.

Townsville will have everything you need there - including an airport to use on holidays. If you are used to living in a major city and love the hustle and bustlel of that then Townsville may take a bit of getting used to.

We lived in Townsville for almost 2 years, and it felt isolated to us at times, especially during the wet when it was cut off from the highways and supplies couldn't get through. Also I felt it was not like a big(ger) city but a large village, then again it was 5 years ago might be different now.

Lifestyle is good, the Strand is great, beautiful winters but didn't like the wet season, too humid for us, and the mozzies, and distances to a major city. Positive is not many traffic jams, nice estates and no (real) winter.

I'd also buy or rent a house with pool, we had one and you really need it and can use it most times of the year.

I lived there a year when I moved out in 2004. It's a nice city and people are usually just passing through so you will meet lots of people in the same boat. I never felt isolated and made good friends there – Easier than making friends in Melbourne as it has a small town feel... Magnetic island is a brilliant weekend getaway as well.
