Where are you looking to work ?

Do you want to commute or not etc etc.

The east side is very nice, but its also very big, so an idea of where you are headed will help.

You can also look on www.realestate.com.au

plenty there if you know the rough area to look in.

Get a short term temporary accomodation (if no one is willing to put you up for a while) for a couple of weeks and then get around the estate agents in the areas of your choice.

How to choose an area? Ask yourself typical life questions such as: where will I/we be working? How far from central Melbourne do I want to be? Near the sea/in the country/built up suburbs? And then get as many experiences from those on here as possible to narrow your choices down. You can research a lot of areas online with your friend google....oh, and of course, do you have kids to consider as some areas are less kid friendly than others. When you've narrowed your choice down you can start getting some real ideas about the areas you fancy.

Sorry for bouncing the ball back into your court.

Good luck

We live in the S/E suburbs of Melbourne and love it. It really does depend on what you are looking for. There is a forum called BritVics which is just for people moving to Victoria http://s7.invisionfree.com/BritVics and you might find more objective info on there. We stayed in serviced accommodation for three weeks and then hired a car and drove to East, West, North and South of Mlebourne looking at the different areas. You'll get a feel for which type of area you'll like by doing this. Good luck.
