Living in Darwin

Just out of curiosity, Has anyone in this forum ever lived in Darwin? Do you know anyone that lives in Darwin? Has anyone in the forum every thought of living in Darwin?

Yes spent 2 years living and working there. Still have some great friends who live there. 2 years was enough but enjoyed it whilst being there. Quite a few government jobs, quite a few military personnel as it has become one of their main bases now. Had a ball there, plenty of parties, and always love going back there for a visit. The downside felt a bit isolated from the rest of Oz, good side Asia is on your doorstep. People are friendly and it's easy to make friends. It also has quite a transit population so sometimes your new found friends move on. But the friends I have there have been there for years.

I have friends living in Palmerston and Humpty Doo, don't you just laugh the names they have there. The best one I liked was in Fanny Bay, with a road called Dickward Drive :D

Thanks all for your input.

How is the night life in Darwin? How are the pubs, clubs?
What about art galleries, theater?
What are the nicer suburbs to live in?
Are the crime statistics any worse than in Sydney?

I'm really curious....I'm very interested in the real estate market in NT and would like info, about the nicer suburbs. Possibly get myself out of the "rat race."

Night Life?....much as you would expect for a town of this size, in this position and with a wet/dry tropical climate. Busy pubs, several clubs which used to be open till 6am, but I don't know if that has changed at all since I left in 97.

I believe territorians are possibly Australia's biggest drinkers (consider the size of the Darwin stubbie!). The climate does make living there thirsty work. That said, I always found the 2 clearly defined seasons very enjoyable. The dry is just that...not a cloud to be seen from April till October...and 34C everyday. The builld up is a tad trying and its impossible to keep your clothes dry for more than a couple of minutes after you put them on..but once the wet kicks in its much cooler and hence summer temps are often considerably lower than southern cities. Plus the storms are excellent. I believe that Palmerston is one of the most lightening struck spots on earth and I can personally vouch that close calls are not uncommon !

Space for development is very limited in Darwin city and the Northern suburbs. Most houses there are older (though obviously post Tracey) and tend to be very similar (Ipresume coding regs)

The growth area is Palmerston, about 20 ks out on the Stuart Hway. It was booming when I left and since then a further 3 or 4 suburbs have been developed. Houses there are modern with verandahs, and tend towards tropical designs, not like the totally unsuitable brick and tile tuscan style sweat boxes found in SE Qld.

Property prices always used to be considerably more expensive than much of coastal Qld, but this is no longer the case and prices are quite attractive. I'd move back myself, but the outlaws live there!

Check out any of the new suburbs, Gray, Bakewell, Gunn, Fairway waters and all the others. Better still go rural and get 5 acres with crocs in your creek...great fun for wet season swimming !!!
