Also anyone with young children, how expensive are things like nappies, baby food etc. in comparison?

The websites should help. Bear in mind bi-lo is cheaper than woollies or coles. IGA is more expensive.

Nappies are not gr8 out here. Not a fan of huggies or snugglers. No pampers alas. The best fitting ones I have found a are baby love. Baby foods are also limited - with heinz and golden cicrle are the main brands. Formula is ok. Found a nestle one similar to apatamil.

Bring whatever baby equipment you have as baby shops are rubbish out here. Not as many innovative products.

Selected highlights from the latest bill ... these are mostly 'named brand' so you can buy cheaper ...

34 pack of 'walker' nappies - $17
Baby Wipe Refill (large) - $3
Sard Soap (stain remover) - $1.80
12 pack Wiggles yoghurts - $6
2 litres of full-cream milk - $3.40
Kleenex Tissues (large pack) - $2.20
350g Bacon - $3.80
100g shaved ham - $3.30
680 w/meal bread - $2.70
Half a cauli - $3.50
Mini cabbage - $2
1 bottle Jack Daniels and 25 Winfield Reds - $45 :)

Veggie prices are going through the roof soon apparently due to the recent rain and hard-to-harvest crops ...

Try and get your veggies from a market if there is one. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the proce you pay at supermarkets and they are much nicer too! In fact one week got some juicy tomatoes for free and they made a gr8 tomato and basil soup.

I find the vegies and meat at Coles etc not as good as some little local shop. There is a great chinese butchers in Randwick and cheaper than Coles. The meat is fantastic.

Fair point, OR even better, grow yer own ... that is the wife's department but I swear the stuff we pull out of the ground (or pick) tastes infinitely better than the stuff we bought ... mmmm, chillis :)
