Good to see someone blame the Germans for a change instead of the Irish

I just googled capital city prices: (mistake eh).

Just came across the tidbit that alchohol prices don't scale:
so a schooner (3/4 pint) in Sydney is half the price of a pint.

True?

Tooheys is $4.50 a schooner in my local. And in the leagues club up the road its only $3.30. I agree that the CBD prices are ridiculous but from what i'm seeing, everybody is going there and paying it, mostly Brits to be honest. The Aussies are mostly out at there locals or having BBQ's.

Well of course. The rosewater in Adelaide used to do very cheap beer indeed, with the express intent that you would put 20 times what you drank in the pokie machines like the rest of the sad old duffers in there. I live three doors up from a pub which noone outside of my vicinity would no was there and you can still get a pint for £2.30 in West London. The pubs on the high street charge double that...

They used to charge 40 pence a pint of guiness in the student union a my uni a fair few years ago now admitedly. It was great you could get smashed of your face for £4. Those were the days!

I was just wondering how much a pint of beer costs in Australia compared to the UK, if we know the true answer to this, we can work out the true costs of everything else, lol.

I was in France for four days last week talk about pricey. I paid 4.5 euros for a cafe au lait in Archachon. you can go into a cafe in bordeaux and pay 3 euros then 4 euros for the same thing next door. In the uk a coffee e.g cappucino, latte. flat white etc is about £1.50-£2 wherever you go and you get a decent amount whereas in France its just a couple of swigs...

In Perth it's about $10 a pint in the cheap bars, and about $10 a schooner in the expensive ones.

Which is three or four quid on the traditional exchange rate. Those arguing about how expensive Australia are being very disingenuous if they don't accept that when Sterling went into the toilet so did its overseas purchasing power. While Australia has got more expensive, the huge disparity is mostly caused by the crashing British economy. Four quid for a pint is like any UK city pub - or cheaper - and remember pints are massively subsidised in UK pubs by spirits and other drinks. Often pubs make zero profit on beer.

A 3 quid pint (of which few are now) is 1/3rd the price - ish.

My salary is over x4 that of the UK. So I'm actually ahead.

I also don't drink 'out' that often. It's all about socialising at friends. The wife gets discount drinks from her work. So it's easier to carry a slab to a mates.

It's the cheap Tesco summer offers of 3 crates for 20 quid that we don't get.

That's the point. Whether it's £4 a pint in London or $7 a schooner in Sydney or $18 a pint in Perth (I have travelled to most Oz cities for work and Perth certainly takes the cake for price of food and booze) it really is only relevant if you are a British tourist on £££££. Right now it is not good for a British tourist to be coming to Oz on a boozing holiday.
