my partner is taken his vetesses test for carpenter on the 16th oct when he gets this does he still need to have a lisence to work in adelaide we thought this is why he had tto take the test so he could work in australia can anyone help:confused::confused:

Hi,

Unfortunately having your skills assessed for a visa to enter Oz does not automatically give you a 'trade license' to work in your chosen state. Each state has its own process for this (and charges). There has been talk about changing this but quite honestly I would be surprised as its allot of revenue for the state governments to give up. Its also about liability once you start working.

So......basically once your arrive in Oz you can start the process of applying for the trade license. If you've collated allot of paper work to have your skills assessed (as my hubby did for TRA) then you will at least be organized. For example when we arrived in Brissy 2005 hubby had to:
Get Blue Card = health & safety
Attend business course at a TAFE
Have his skills assesed and attend TAFE for practicle training / assessment
Then after putting in place liability insurance and obtaining Australian Business Number (ABN) and tax file number he was ready to apply. In all took about 9 (yes 9) months.

Here are the licensing regulations for South Australia:

Any person (including a company) who carries on business as a building work contractor, including conducting the business of performing building work with a view to the sale or letting of land or buildings, must be licensed as a contractor under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995 (including sub-contractors). If a business operates as a partnership then each partner must hold their own licence.

Are you considered a Supervisor?

If you supervise the performance of building work (including your own), or act as a supervisor on behalf of a person or company which holds a building work contractors licence, you must hold a building work supervisors registration. You are not required to be a registered supervisor if you are a registered architect.


So as far as I can tell from that, he would only need a licence if he was a contractor or sub contractor. Or he would need a supervisors registration if he is a supervisor. http://ocba.sa.gov.au/licensing/buil...efinition.html :)

No one is expecting you not to work for 9 months - just doing something else or under the supervision of another carpenters license - which usually means less pay.
