Default Lets say we go for a holiday/visit/reccy - which visa should we apply for?

from looking on the website i recon we could either go on a tourist visa or on a sponsored family visa (h's brother lives in tasmania)

But im wondering what the difference of these 2 visa's would mean to us in real terms?

we'd be looking at going for longer than the usuall 2 weeks holiday, maybe upto 6 months depending on finances, not longer because we've got the children's education to concider. we'd be travelling about in au and tas, checking out work/business prospects (not actually doing any work you understand) and checking out area's and housing and schools and generally getting a feel for aus life.

Im presuming that if we go as a sponsored relative, that we would have to reside with said relative? is this correct? that would be very restrictive wouldnt it, we wouldnt be able to stray far from tas in that case...please correct me if im wrong.

If we go as a tourist, we can stay where we like and have a lot more freedom to stay wherever we want but wouldnt that mean our stay would be limited to 3 months?

HI there,

I think if you go on a relly visa it will take longer to get, and also they will have to show how they can sponsor you for the duration. Ie, they would be financially responsible for you (even if you have all the money you need) and would have to show how they could do that if needs be.

A tourist visa is quicker and easier, but yes, time limited. If you go to www.immi.gov.au they have a list of all the visa types

Easier to get three month ETA (visitor visa). You can get it online at www.immi.gov.au - obtainable in seconds - and cheaper than getting your travel agent to do it - just fill in passport number, credit card no etc and bingo. You could then extend once you're there for a further couple months. Check out the website...all the info you will need is there

Good luck.
