Default LETS in Australia

Rather than hi-jack another thread....

Information on LETS can be found at http://www.lets-linkup.com/

I don't know why LETS (roughly translated: Local Energy Trading Systems) is so popular in Australia, but we had fun - sold off all the goldfish populating the swimming pool, excess chook eggs and lemons. One of our members made great pizzas and fish and chips, so we used to book a takeaway for Friday nights - delivered and paid for in LETS.

Groups evolve to suit their particular community, so don't expect the same old....

It's a great way to start a social life.

Had a quick scan - I'm interested, so I'll probably get in touch with the contact listed.

Are you planning on setting up a goldfish farm then? You could find a secondary market selling an opportunity to those who want to try swimming with dolphins but find it too pricey

We began by putting a couple of fish in the pool over winter to eat the mosquito larvae. It was an old, above ground pool, and when the liner began to give way, we started to use the community 50m pool and left the goldfish to entertain themselves - which they did. We ended up with about 300 at $1 or one LET a pop. Never a shortage of buyers, and the local pet shops didn't mind because they supplied the accessories!

If you would like to set up your own LETS group, let me know. It's easy to do, and you can have the emphasis on socialising and communication through trading, or whatever. Personally, I'm not really interested in candles and having my fortune told by a new lifestyler, but I am interested in fresh produce. To each their own. What sort of things would you like to get out of a group?

I hadn't thought that far ahead, but I like the general idea and we've been rejigging our sums and its just possible that neither of us will have to get "proper" jobs for two years - so every little will help.
