Leaving St.George. Which bank to go to?
I've long had the shits with StGeorge bank about their account keeping fees, which were AUD 6/mo unless a balance of 1k was in the account at all times. OK, that in effect meant a loss of about thirty bucks a year in interest.
Today they wrote to me explaining that as of 1/7 that will increase to a 3k minimum, or a loss of 100 per year in interest. No way.
So I'm going to change banks. I need very little in the way of features from the account - just online access to statements & transaction history, Bpay & 3rd party transfers online, and an ATM card. Don't need cheques, debit cards, phone access or anything else.
Can anyone recommend a fee free account offering the above?
Cheers,
Alex

For anyone who digs this thread up in the future, the answer is HSBC or Members Equity.

Ditto Members Equity. they have been brilliant. Had good experiences with ANZ as well.

HSBC online savings account: it pays interest, you have all the online facilities, chequebook, cash out at all post offices and virtually all supermarkets, no charges. Link it with an ING savings account for greater interest, if you have spare cash.

is the address for HSBC Australia. HSBC International is I believe based in London - I don't have their phone # but try a search.
You can open an account over the counter on arrival - if you do it within a few days you don't need more than your passport, visa and an address - and the $2k to open! (You don't need to keep $2k in the account but the interest is very low unless you do).
