When you start learning to drive in oz - do you have to take a theory test aswell like you do here in the UK????

there's a bit more to it than that. in NSW for example as a leaner driver you have to take a theory test before getting your license. Then you have to wear L-plates on your car for 12 months and keep a log book, with a minimum quota of verifiable hours (day and night) to be fulfilled.

Then you take your practical test. If you pass then you have to wear red P Plates on your car for 1 year. Restrictions: You must have a BAC of 0.00 (so no strepsils allowed lol), you can not carry any passangers after a certain time, and you are speed limited to 90kph.

After 12 months you take a hazard perception test an if you pass then you switch to green P plates for another 2 years!! again you are limited to 0.00 BAC but you are given a 10kph allowance and can go up to 100.

Thats 4 years before you are qualified as a full license driver.

Also on P plates in NSW you are restricted to driving cars with less than 8 cylinders and no turbos, unless its a diesel.

Now lets work through that : VW Polo 1.4 is banned purely because it contains a turbo (even though in the polo case its for fuel efficiency, and its hardly fast).
A VW Golf R32, which is a 6 cylinder beast of a car, with ferocious power is ok...because it has no turbo.

Also remember if its diesel its fine, so you can get a twin-turbo V12 Audi Q7 - again with an obscene amount of power and torque...but its ok, because its a diesel.

you also get lower point allowance on your license till you get your full license, meaning if you are zapped by a camera on the worng day (double demerits) you can lose your license in 1 move.

There isnt a loophole either by learning in the UK. Depending on when your license was issued, you will just be slotted into the appropriate place in the P plate programme. i.e. if you get your license 1 day before you move over, then you will have to exchange it for a red p plate license.

You can only legally drive on your UK license for 3 months if you are a resident before exchanging it.

And just like anything, wearing a label like a P plate, just makes you guilty of being a shiot driver and just causing accidents in the eyes of media and other drivers. I have seen non p plate drivers pull some horrifically dangerous manoeuvers simply to get past a p plater (ironically it was probably justified in their heads as a personal safety move).
