I don't think they do learn to drive in oz, they just get in a car and go judging by the standard of driving in oz.

Here in QLD they actually started to use L plates last year, or was it 2007
New - Learning to Drive in Queensland

If you are under 25 years old, and do not have a Learner Licence, you will have to complete 100 hours of recorded logbook driving with Qualified Instuctors or with friends or family.

However, a one hour lesson with an accredited driver trainer will count towards three hours in your learner logbook, up to a maximum of 10 x one hour sessions.

Therefore; if you do 10 hours with a Driving instructor and 70 with Family, you get the full 100 hour credit.

Driving experience recorded in an approved logbook from a prescribed country (including the UK) to a maximum of 50 hours can count towards your 100 hours driving experience.

in nsw you have to take a theory test before you can drive with L's... i'm unsure of the process after that as it has changed

Yes driving lessons are cheaper here than in the UK.. also i only ever had 5 driving lessons in AU and some hours with my parents adn passed... in the UK my friends and family spent absolutely hundreds of pounds and hours and hours of lessons and took ages to pass!

MTPockets is an unknown quantity at this point

If you're heading to NSW it can be a very long process. From what I remember if you have an overseas provisional licence they give you one try at the test here without having to put in the hours. If you fail it though, it's back to the beginning.

There are variations on what's required, but you may have to do up to 120 hours of logged practice (yes 120 - that's not a typo). So unless you have a partner/family with whom to put in those hours it could be damn expensive and time consuming.

So, I was in the same position as you - and decided to pass the test in the UK before I left (although still have to have various P plates for 3 years).

if you are going to be going to wa

you need to a comp test - then you get your l plates

you then take your driving exam

if you pass then you have to do so many hrs driving on l plates with a log bk after 6 months then you can take your hazzard preception test after that you get yr p plates
