www.ht.com.au are a large co in Sydney (post Aus wide) and are pretty competitive on drives and other peripherals, although not sure how they compare on notebooks.

Dell. They are a lot cheaper than anything you will get in the shops that I have seen but they also seem prone to breaking down. It is just a question of how willing you are to take that risk / extended warranty.

Re: Laptops?
My husband (professional geek) always recommends Dell, particularly for not so techy people, but a friend here in Sydney has just had awful problems with them and their aftersales NON-service.

2 GHz Core 2 duo processor
17" WXGA widescreen
Blu-ray player
Nvidia 512 MB DDR2 graphics card
4 GB main memory
320 GB Hard disk
Wireless lan
Windows Vista + a whole bundle of other software
This laptop is better than my desktop. If I had $1499 hanging around, I would definitely be buying one.

Re: Laptops?
If I was getting a laptop it would be this stylish Sony Vaio; $1699

but I've decided to wait till after Xmas, CES (tech showcase) is Jan 8-11th, I'll be seeing what pop's up. There's been proof of new Dell and Sony.

And don't forget if you have a PR visa and kids you may be able to claim up to 50% of the cost back at tax return time.

I work in enterprise level IT Support on Windows systems and I will not use Windows at home anymore. Mac's are far more stable in my opinion and if your not very tech savy you'll have a much more enjoyable time as they do just work.
Please don't shoot me down for that, just my opinion.

I'd recommend getting a Mac. Yes a bit more expensive than a Dell but so worth it in the long run.

It has been worth every penny ten times over. So many of my friends and family have been tempted to convert on their next laptop, just for the reliability.
It's little features that I love, other than the fact I know it will do what I ask it to, it's also amazingly easy to use and adapt to, it also tells me the time on the hour ("Victoria" does!) and tells me Knock Knock jokes should I wish... OK they aren't the important things...but the fact it has maintained its speed and uses memory very efficiently, makes me love it to pieces every time I use it.
