Lap top - internet advice required

Need a bit of advice, have got a new lap top not able to use it for the internet as we are living in a caravan and not got a phone line. We are keen to be able to access the internet as soon as we can when we get to Adelaide, have heard that I can get a Netgear Router from the UK and this will work in Oz.

Is it worth getting one, or best to wait until I get to Oz.

Sorry but really am a complete novice when it comes to computers/internet.

Hoping I can get some advice.

Nicky

Hi Nicky, loads of deals in Oz where you can buy a usb plug in mobile router, so if you can get a mobile signal you can get internet, you can pay by the month until you get a long term place to stay.
Cheers Sim

Pretty sure they're not free though... at least when I connected in Cairns a couple of years ago it wasn't...

Yup Maccas and Starbucks both have wifi hotspots (so you can vary the menu!) and you have to pay for both of them. From memory they are both Telstra hotspots and you can either plug in your credit card details or buy an up front voucher from a newsagency or such. The USB modems look great but Aus is noted for its poor broadband coverage - as long as you are in one of the big cities you are fine (mostly) but as soon as you go to anywhere even remotely rural you dont get the signal.

Vodaphone do a 5Gb download limit USB totally wireless internet connection that does not require a phone line. It is 39 dollars a month and a great deal for those on the go. Not sure how the contract works if you have no permanent address though.

We have this for mobile internet it is without doubt the best value plan by far. However, if you are planning on travel beyond major metro areas (rural etc) it is next to useless and instead Telstra is the go.

Telstra is by far the better and higher speed product. But by gosh you pay for it and for most users the vodafone is awesome.

We tried to get a wireless card thingy (ok, it's OH that's a geek!) when we first got to Adelaide and without proof of address you can't even get one of those. Well we couldn't.

Luckily the holiday apartment we stayed in initially had access so we just used that or we would have been a bit stuck as we needed the internet to find somewhere to live so we could have an address......

I believe the library has free access and of course there may be some providers who will let you sign up without the address, we tried 3 I think, the network that is. Maybe someone else on here will know which ones?

The router will work but you need a DSL modem, a phone line with DSL and the ability to configure it all up.
