Default L-plate Law For Novice Drivers in QLD

LEARNER motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists will have to display L-plates on their vehicles from January 31 2005 or face $120 fines.

Accompanying drivers also will cop the $120 fine if the learners are caught driving without L-plates.

The three-year trial of compulsory L-plates will determine whether Queensland provisional drivers and riders will have to display P-plates.

Queensland, with 214,000 learner drivers, is the only state without compulsory L-plates and P-plates.

Those that have just passed their tests. In NSW you get your red Ps for a year followed by your Green Ps for 2 years. A P plater in NSW must display the correct coloured Ps and stick below 90kmh. There is a computerised test to get from red to greens and greens to a full license.

Each state is different.

blimey!
Where do new migrants fit in? If you'd had a full licence in the uk for 3+ years, would you just need to do the theory and not need the plates, or would you be classed as a new passer?(providing you passed of course!)

If you have held your full UK license for 3 years you would get the full license if you pass the knowledge test.

Info for QLD:

A full UK licence holder can get an Open QLD Licence on completion of the theory test. I haven't found anywhere that says how long you have to have held a UK one yet, unlike NSW which is very specific about it.

The period you will hold a Provisional licence will be determined by your age:
If you are:
• under 23 years of age, you must hold your Provisional licence for at least three years
• at least 23 years but under 24 years of age, you must hold your licence for at least two years
• 24 years of age and over, you must hold your licence for at least one year.
You do not need to hold the Provisional licence continuously for the required period before you apply for an Open
licence. You can accumulate the time over a number of individual periods within the previous five years.

You become eligible for a Provisional licence if you:
• are at least 17 years of age
• hold and have held a Learner licence for that class of vehicle for at least six months within the previous two years.

You may apply for the Learner licence when you are at least 16 years and six months of age. The Learner licence will be issued for one year.

Queensland had P plates many years ago when a certain peanut farmer was in charge of the state, but for some strange reason decided to get rid of them.
