Default kilts in Brisbane - hire or buy????

Hi
My hubbys scottish and for formal stuff here, hires a kilt. Do they have kilt hire places in Brisbane? Do scots still wear their kilt outfits when they emigrate?
Or should we just buy one and take it with us?

Similar q with suits - take them or buy new when necessary in Brisbane? Bearing in mind that he has good quality wool suits of the 'english gent' look about them - classic iykwim! Are they more expensive over there?

Thanks

Rea

Scots had kilts on on New Years Eve. Sure you can get them here but I'd guess pretty specialised. If you can afford to, I'd buy my own over there. Wish I'd gotten one before I came :-(

I had an 'English' suit and I found it bloody warm to wear in Brissie. I bought one here and got quite a good one for around $600. Loads of suit shops to choose from in Bris so wouldn't worry about that side of it.

Not sure about kilts, but for suits only bring UK ones if they are light weight (unless you expect to travel with work to southern states of NZ). I brought about 5 or 6 with me - hardly ever wear them. The last time I put a suit on was for a funeral - I was sitting there in the chapel when I noticed that the legs of the trousers were falling into holes when I touched them - the moths had had more use from my suit in the last 5 years than I had. I wore suits about 10 or 20 times in the first year here, 5 times then next year and about once a year since then. If i can keep the moths away I reckon I have enough suits to last me till I die (unless I live past 120).

Cheers,

DagBoy

Hi Rea

I bought a kilt a year or so before we came out here, got the whole Prince Charlie garb, the quality of kilt, ie the weight, is much better in Scotland, had hired a kilt outfit the last time we were over here 3 years ago and found that the quality of kilt, jacket, shoes etc was pretty average, the socks were a joke. My advice would be to get an outfit and bring it over, also, get a dress sporran and a casual sporran for those less than formal occasions if you know what i mean

As for suits, i have a few next suits taken over from the UK, very rarely wear them, its too bloody hot for a suit jacket in Queensland!! Use them when needed, but its a shirt and trousers out here, even ties are becoming rare!!

Hope this helps

Bill

I'll second that, no where better than Scotland to get that hand weaved quality kilt made to measure.

Only have one sporran so no dress or casual stuff here. It's seal fur or nothing

Hi Rea,

Def bring one with you, you can get them here but they are not the same, my hubbys parents sent him one last year and he was so over the moon (yeah he showed that too under his kilt!!!) he wore it on New Years eve and it was great, even though we were the only Scots out of 20 English, he took a beating but we had a fantastic night

Hey Lisa,
We still have the photos to prove it, and the video god was there 20 there, now we know why it took us 2 days to tidy it up, just remember the way that outside table looked about 3am :scared:

P.S. Hope he plans on doing the same this year
