It's not on day to day life but a really good book is "Are we there yet?" by Alison Lester. It's also a great book to send back as a birthday/ christmas present when you live here! It follows the journey of a family round Australia as they take 6 months or a year out (which families do here) and travel round the whole of Oz. It tells you interesting facts about each place. I'd say it can go from 3 yo's - 10 yo's, easy reading but very interesting.

I am not sure if you remember a programme on BBC1 i believe "Wild downunder" they made a book out of the series, mainly in pictures, i believe its worth it, i know its not exactly history or way of life, but its about aussie nature and beauty, i loved it.
