Well, my wife has landed a job in Karratha, go girl!

anyone had any experiences of this place?
It's hot I know but how about coping with the heat?

Its a large country city and hot is an understatement. What about housing, is it included in the package as houses are around the 4 to 500,000 and the rents are $600/700 for a small house.

At my leaving drinks on Friday I was chatting to an engineer who works up there. Dampier (the port) is the older part and about 10,000 inhabitants but as the place got full because of the mining industry Karratha has grown rapidly as a kind of twin town and he quoted 23,000 population so a fair size. Between them they have everything you would expect in a small town but if you feel the need for the bright lights Perth is about 2 hours flight away. He did say that if you are interested in outdoor pursuits like sailing, fishing, camping, bushwalking then it is a great place to live.

It's booming & is also a very expensive place to live. It can cost $800pw to rent a nice 4x2 or $800k to buy. People either love it or hate it. If you like outdoor pursuits then you will love it. If you love city life then you will probably hate it. It has a large transient population who FIFO for resources work.

Red face Re: Karratha

My brother lives in Dampier working for Rio Tinto, he is happy but is working very hard. He is enjoying life up there but will be back in Perth for when his eldest goes to high school. He has five year plan up there.
