We had all the contents of a large three bed house, plus a loft full of stuff plus three large sheds/workshops that were full of tools, compressor bikes etc etc - got it all easily in a 20ft reefer container and we keep remembering stuff we got rid of thinking we wouldn't have room for but we could have fitted in. Concrete mixer had to be bought today and we should have brought our old one over.

We're in a 4 bed house....not taking absolutely everything but a good chunk of it. In terms of Bedrooms though, we're only taking 1 bed and 1 wardrobe (the others are built-ins etc). Just had our quote from White's today and they reckon we'll need sole use of a 40-footer. I can't believe it. We've 4 more companies coming next week so it'll be interesting to see what they say.

But to answer your question from our perspective, Whites have said 4 bed = 40-footer. That makes it well expensive!

I know this isn't a thread about cost....but just HOW GOOD a deal could we get on the shipping price if we took the Shippers own insurance? Any advice?

I've used Letton Percival to insure our container 1.53% plus 5% tax on the premium.

Owd - is that maths ? - I don't do maths

I'll let you know! We have had several companies round and apparently we are either just over or just under a 20 footer. We have a 3 bed semi, with a busy loft and garage!

Ebay is carrying a lot of our stuff as we speak!

It worth thinking about what you would not want to go when the container is full and you have to start ditching things. I know this sounds obvious advice, but we found we were pretty frazzled by the time they came. Although we told them what we wanted left behind if this situation arose, they ignored us and put that stuff in first when we weren't watching. They took 2 days to load ours and we couldn't understand at the time why they left some stuff unwrapped and in the middle of the floor on the first day. On reflection I think they were very good at judging what would fit and had picked out some things of reasonable value that would wouldn't complain too much about if there wasn't room. We had friends take the most valuable stuff but the removal men still got a fair bit. I was annoyed because they had packed some bulky junk we weren't going to take, but youdon't find this out until later unless you watch everything they do. That was a 3bedroom with 3 motorbikes (one a trials bike so not much room) in a 20ft container.

Just dug out an old thread I replied to this is what I took
We had a 20ft here is what we took approx

2 double beds and mattresses (beds did flat pack)
1 single 4 poster (flat)
2 Side boards
4 seater sofa
3 seater sofa
chair
poofer
Large 8 seater table flat but not very
6 dinning chairs
2 x 5 draw chests
1 tall boy
1 dressing table large
1 3 draw chest
Large 32" tv in crate
4 wadrobes flat packed down which we never used
1 Desk
1 chest freezer
1 upright freezer
washing machine
tumble drier
2 coffee tables
1 Glass cabinet very delicate and made it in one peice
1 buerau
large solid bookcase
tools and such
other portable tellies, videos, dvd players
approx 50-75 large boxes of this and that

Remember you can pack the draws, freezers, sideboards with bedding, cushions, clothes. We put all dvds cds videos in the draws.

and still more room if we needed it they know what they're doing and can fit so much in.

Hope this helps

Cheers Jo

We told our shippers that if it didnt all go in a 20ft what was over wasnt going. Leave aside some stuff you feel you dont desperately need and leave it off if it doesnt fit. Packers turned up and said no sweat. Sometimes the agents just over quote.
