just experienced first earthquake!
well last night we had an earthquake here in NZ and its the first proper one since we came here 16 months ago!Its took stuff off the shelves and made a bit of a disturbance through Queenstown, but nothing serious. It was even felt in Christchurch so the local news said.Weird experience,Ms Deedee said it was like been on a bumpy road while stood still

Blimey... scarey.
We once experienced a tremour one night when we were living out in Spain. A shaking and a rattling.
It must be really frightening in a full blown earthquake.

Really glad you are O.K. Deedee!! Must be a pretty hairy experience and one of the few disadvantages I can see in NZ, over home! Does anyone know how frequent they happen around Christchurch and do they have such a thing as a regular 'Big One'!!
Hopefully it shook a few of the rats out of the walls for you Deedee!!

I lived in Auckland for 7 years and never felt an earthquake. NZ has earthquakes on a daily basis but most are insignifficant only the monitors can measure them.
Her is a list of last Major Earthquakes
Don't let earthquakes put you off they are a minor problem. Cannot remember last time someone was killed by an earthquake in NZ. You stand a bigger chance being injured on the road by a significant factor.

must have been a fairly big one this as it was 7.1 on the scale and most folks i have talked to in town today(big trip out to town today ) said it was the biggest they had ever felt in 40 years. It shut Gores power off too i heard!
The mainquake was at 12:15 nz time but that one i did'nt feel as i was in the truck and the roads are so bumpy i would'nt have felt anything unless the ground fell through but the aftershock was at 02:00 and that was a real wobbler!!!:scared:

The biggest one I've felt was in May I think. At work on the 7th floor, the weirdest thing was looking out of the window and seeing the office blocks opposite gently swaying backwards and forwards.
Cheers,

just seen pictures on the news from fiordland where the centre of the quake was....:scared: :scared: :scared:
It looks like huge chunks of the mountains have fallen into the sea,BIG land slides the size of a small village. In central otago theres a town called Clyde, under a huge resovoir, and thats directly on one of the 300 fault lines that criss cross NZ.If part of the mountains round there had fallen into the lake i really do think Clyde would be wiped off the map and the lake Wakatipu would be a few metres deeper.
