Just arrived in Melbourne
Hi all
Just joined the site as myself and boyfriend, Adam just arrived in Melbourne! Adam has a 2 year contract with his firm and I am looking for work. Would be great to hear from fellow expats on settling in and working in Melbourne, we're in early to mid thirties just looking for somewhere to live starting in St Kilda and Prahan

Hi Vanessa,
I am not in Melbourne (I'm in the US) but I wanted to pop by and say hi.
Welcome to the site. How are you finding Australia so far?
Sue

So far so good, I really like the city and Adam is settling in to his new job, we've even got tickets to the Australian Open tomorrow! I think it will probably hit in a couple of weeks how far we are from home and friends but I am positive we can make some friends and really enjoy the experience while we are here.
Thanks for asking

My husband and I moved to Melbourne 6 weeks ago. Like you guys, husband is working and I'm looking at the moment. What do you guys do? There's a meet on Saturday night if you fancied it? There's a link in the 'meet up' section.

I came out on a 2 year work visa in 2000....still here. It kind of grows on you.
Still my employer refused to help me get PR- on the grounds that everyone posted here wants PR and so they help no-one.
Prahan is a good spot for a couple with no kids and wanting "cafe lifestyle"

Would be good if you could make the pub tomorrow night
Hope you enjoyed the tennis, I went last night and had a great time

Welcome to Melbourne!
I see you're saying it like a local...but you've missed an 'r'...it's Prahran...wierd innit!
I'm sure you will but don't forget the suburbs inbetween....like Windsor, South Yarra etc. Windsor is much the same as Prahran but Windsor has I reckon the better end of Chapel St for eating, drinking and socialising.... Prahran & South Yarra better for shopping.
It's a great area around here (I'm very close to Windsor) and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a decent rental.
There have been at least a couple of meets in a great pub called The Local on Carlisle St, St Kilda (right up near Chapel St) - you should check it out it's a great spot - especially upstairs in summer. If you like cocktails...try out Back Bar in Windsor.
Enjoy!

Re: Just arrived in Melbourne
I would also recommend windsor, st kilda east and even elwood.
I live between windsor and st kilda and its perfect. 14 mins to the CBD by train and 15 minute walk to the beach.
If you look at St Kilda itself, I would be wary of living right in the heart of st kilda unless you love loud music and go out all the time etc. Its good to live close enough to head out there but far enough away to get away from it all IMO.
