Probably. My cousin is over from Sydney and when I took him for a drink, he drank John Smiths and said he normally drank VB. So I've put 2 and 2 together and deduced that they are somewhat close enough.

The terminology is a little confusing. 'Bitter' as in Victoria Bitter, is generally a lager-type drink.
Tooheys have Tooheys New, which is lager, and Tooheys Old, which is what would be more like an English-style bitter.
Don't get the impression this type of drink is particularly popular in Oz though?

If you can afford it mate you can get John Smiths or Tetleys at most large bottle shops (I'm talking about QLD). As for Aussie beers avoid anything that says bitter on the can (VB, XXXX bitter and Melbourne bitter etc) as they are just lagers and mostly shite. I would say go for a pale ale or porter of some description from Coopers, James Squires or Little Creatures.
