Me- not working
Hubby- Carpenter on $30 an hr

Bricklayer = price work average 2500 a week
OH , nurse = 1000 a week

Me also Carpenter in Perth and wages for me differ weekly......good week,including a few hours Saturdays....up to $1500.00 , bad week.. no Saturday and minimum hours....$850/950.00.
Hourly rates can differ...know most are on $25/30 per hour and heard talk of some on up to $40 per hour.All say the same though...If you can make up to $1500.00 in a week you are doing well.

design engineers in resources sector in Perth are on AUD60-80/hour usually for a 45 hour week plus a 5-10% loyalty bonus. So that's AUD130-180k/year.

Hubby Engineering Electronics Technician offered $50k starting salary
Me offered job with well known migration agency as trainee $34k starting salary plus bonuses.

Hubby is an Airframe Mechanic and is on $42k plus overtime which takes him up to about $60k.

Me - Snr Business Analyst - $110k + supa
Husband - IT Solutions Architect (contractor) $85 per hour
These are Sydney wages

I work in marketing, current salary is about $85k + super

OH works in recruitment and made about $125k last year, including commission payments (which unfortunately get taxed as fringe benefits at 50%)
These are both Sydney salaries

OH + self=both optometrists, jobs similar to ours in Tas being advertised at $90k + super, 4 weeks annual leave + 1 day professional training leave.
As Wall & Floor Tilers Deb & I charge between $30-$35 per m2 + GST dependant upon areas tiled and the amount of metres, distance to job etc. Rural areas like ours pay more than metro areas, distances to jobs are much further though

Hubby- Carpenter $30 an hour
Me - Retail $20 an hour



Hairdressers in Townsville are paid around $20 an hour.

Admin Officers/Receptionists up to about $20 an hour, more for temping.


Sergeant Aussie Army $56,000 pa + allowances

Warrant Officer is about $62,000

I am a manager of an engineering company on the Gold Coast. I work from 7 till 3, Monday to Thursday and 7 till 1 on a Friday and my yearly salary is $60,000 plus i get 10% of the profits at the end of each tax year and i also get 5 weeks holiday per year. Not bad for starters i suppose

Legal Secretary, $23 ph.

I am going to be paid $51,000 + super as a childcare co-ordinator/Director in WA.

I have a nursery nurse qualification and enquired about jobs, the pay was aprox $13 for an assistant and $17 for a group leader, if you work on a casual basis (as and when they want you) then you get better at around $20.
These are just the average that I found and I'm sure does vary from employer to employer and place to place.

Cant answer for welders but we pay our welding inspectors $55 per hour for an expected 45 hour week (contract), which equates to approx $113k pa

Ours crap also $45 salery - overtime is unpaid. OH is Engine and Airframes fitter, we're in Vic. We've been here 7 months and I'm still looking for part- time work



Senior officer SA Govt AU$66k+


My hubby is a forklift truck engineer in SA if that helps. On $21.50 per hour for a 38 hour week.

spraypainter full contractor approx $700 per day before tax


Plasterer/Perth
Hubby (Set) $6.50 per square metre 150-200 metres per day
Son 18 (apprentice plasterer) $140 per day
Wife (Plasterers Labourer....I kid you not..) $14 hr.


In South Australia an Electrician can expect to earn between $20 and $25 per hour working for an employer once they are fully licenced. Casual workers can expect to get another 25% on top of that to cover the lack of sick/holiday pay etc.



hubbie painter $20 an hour


One of my friends is a fully qualified spray painter. Although he hadn't worked in the trade for years. He just left the Post office with a package, and had a job lined up for starting the day after he left. Takes home circa 1,200 per fortnight, on about 21 dollars per hour. That should be considered starting money, as he hadn't worked at it full time for 20 odd years. If he was a self employed contractor he reckons he would be on circa 45 bucks per hour.


My husband is a Motor Mechanic (self employed with 2 staff) we earn approx $100k per year.

My brother has been here 3 years and started his own building gang, now has 7 guys and work for +++++ more he can earn in excess of $10k per week after paying wages!!!!
The boom times are really here in Perth


I did some casual work as a childcare assistant and got paid $16.14 an hour.


My purchasing manager is on about $80K but its a bit like a piece of string. Depends on type of industry (and level of technical knowledge required). The level of collaborative work is way behind europe... which opens up a load of opportunities.

Our babysitter is a qualified nanny and currently working in full time Nursery the range is between $15 and $25 per hour. Not sure about part qualified.





On my trip to Safeway Coburg today, I Queried the 30 something male "Checkout chick", who didn't mind answering as there was no one else in the queue. I was pleasantly suprised at his answer. Currently its 15.80 per hour, going up to 16.05 next week. Apparently thats the minimum a mature aged person can earn at any Safeway around Aussie. After 6.00 pm, the rate goes up to Aud 18.90, with weekend sunday rates currently coming in at 27.00 dollars per hour.
Not bad at all, I guess the downside is, it wouldn't be full time, and probably very irregular hours. But as its considered the bottom end of the market, it's quite a decent wage.



I was chef, looked at the wages and its as varied as the UK, depends on where you are and what kind of establishment etc...i saw position in Adelaide for ft chef split shifts - $37,750 and was one of the better salaries and it didnt inspire me to be honest!



I work in the govt. as a web designer. All govt, job salries are fixed at 'levels'.
I`m at level 4 which is about $50k a year before taxes. A level 4 is about $4k less I think (for Graphic Designers).


Hubbie will be on $60,000 as a Sous Chef, Sunshine Coast. 4 days on, 3 days off (double shifts) Compared to £40k in UK as Head Chef.




Police in WA from $52K-$110K depending on Rank

I will start as a Constable in Qld on about 58K (Supposing I get in!) - that doesn't include overtime. The pay includes 20% added for working shifts and national holidays. Not sure what the top ranks get paid but Ch Superintendant gets about 120K basic. Reckon a Commissioner must be on a hefty wage!!! Might be setting my sights a bit high there though!!!!
Sgt gets 70-85K, Inspector 90-100, Superintendant 100-110. I'm assuming that from Insp upward there is no shift allowance added as the basic wage jumps 20K from senior Sgt to Insp.
I'll be taking a pay cut but I'm not making the move in order to better my career - continue it yes but not better it. If I was after money I'd be staying put and getting promotion

Don't come to Oz for the money! I am a mechanic and started on $45k which rose to $50k after 3 months probabation. You cannot live in Sydney on one salary unless you have brought a huge stash from the UK. Tradesmen are poorly paid here compared to the UK but if you are a senior professional wages give you a nice lifestyle. Get out of Sydney if you want to start a business, you're 5 years too late now. Huge growth is still occurring in Perth and Darwin. More scope in all other states than NSW due to poor economic growth.

welding jobs around $50k but if you want to chase them there are jobs at +$100k, usually fly in- fly out and such

So i got a job as a postie. i've been doing it now for 3 years and love it. last year a earn t $50 k and my wife is a nicu nurse and she earn t $70 k.
We are living in Melbourne and life is good.


Guess it is all relative really, IT generally pays less in OZ than in the UK (particularly London) but it is still relatively well paid compared to most jobs. I work as an IT Project Manager in Perth and here in my role you can expect to earn anywhere between 70-110 per hour as a contractor or probably up to $140k as a permie.....a lot less than in London but still a good wage. We have been hiring java programmers recently and they earn around $70-75 an hour, many of them are young guys in their mid 20s so it is a pretty good income for them.

I am looking at a pay list for maintenace department of a food manufacturing company in Adelaide.
Hourly rates:
Maintenance fitter/mechanic: 25-27
Maintenance electrician: 26-27
Leading hand/supervisor: 29-30
Trade assistant: 15-16
Clerk/storekeeper: 18
Production worker: 15-16
Maintenance Manager: 32
All of these are under AWA, 45 hours working week, overtime at extra 10% (also for work outside normal working hours 6am-8pm), extra 40% for weekend work.
Sick pay, annual leave etc.


I saw a job here in Rockampton Queensland for a mechanic $60.000.




My hubby works in a factory as an electrician too. His rates are
Hourly rate: $26 per hour
Shift allowance: $4.45 per hour
Overtime is time and half for the first 3 hours worked over 8 in any day, then double after that. Saturdays are time and half for 3 hours, then double and Sundays are double all day.He works 38 hours per week, with overtime if/when needed, His shift is 3pm to 11:30pm and he gets paid for meal breaks if he works 8 hours or more.
He brings home around $1900 per fortnight after tax etc. He also gets 9% super paid.
He works quite a lot of hours during 'shutdown' weeks, and the rest of the time he'll do maybe 4 or 5 hours a week over on week days. He is also asked to work for 4 - 6 hours every alternate Saturday (but he manages to get out of that

I believe the going rate is $25-$30 per hour and the working week is 35 -40 hours, depending on heat.

Hi my husband has just got a job in Perth as AC engineer on 26 per hour with super takes it up to nearly 29 per hour and this will be reviewed after 3/ 6 months. You should be looking at around this wage to start as you will need to do an electrical licence as they won't let you work without it. I am sure once you have the licence you will be looking at 30 per hour plus super. Also my husband was impressed with the over time as this is paid at double time after the first 2 hours with his company at all times and not just Sunday so you can probably double your wage if you are happy to work the extra hours.

University Lecturer - Brisbane. $110 ph


IT Service Delivery Manager in Melbourne, for a government agency = $100k plus super. (Add $10k - $30k for private sector).

I'm working casual as a 'research assistant' and I've just had my hourly rate increased to $30 per hour. It's casual because that suits me better, the work is there and I've been offered permanent for a slightly lower rate.



Just started as an IT Contractor doing some AV and SOE consulting. $60 an hour.
Just left a perm job I was in for 5 years. Base was 53k plus 5k for being on call every 5 weeks. Was promoted 3 times without a pay rise. A bit of bloodsucking will do me well for a while and then another perm job to get a mortgage. It is a good time to go contract.


The worst it should get in Melbourne, would be AUD16.50 (Adult rates) per hour, in one of the big Supermarkets, and getting called up to work with only 2 hours notice. Not going when called up would mean going to the bottom of the list, when the shifts are rostered.
Note when established at one of these supermarkets, you can earn up to 28 bucks per hour for working on a public holiday. Plus they will be offered the most hours.
If someone were to arrive in a big centre today, and put their name down at 5 supermarkets, they should be working within a month.
AFAIK, the biggest shortage of staff at present, would be in the (PCA) Personal Care Attendant catagory. Circa from 18 (casual rate) bucks per hour, after a 3 month TAFE course. It can be unpleasant at times though. IE: AKA bum wipers.

Something for you to mull over - I have a junior designer working for me. He's Worley Parsons staff and has 2-3 years post training experience. His salary has just been raised to $89k.
Pay scales mean squat in Perth. Worley Parsons are taking the piss with you.

Some of the Transfield Worley guys aren't on that. A mate of mine has just gone back to Scotland because his salary was a pitiful $73 p/hour.




i work for the defence team cleaning the houses ready for the navy families to move in and i get $30an hour,i get 10hrs to do house and i can do 5hrs 1 day then 5hrs day after,good pay for a cleaner as average here is like $16 to 20 an hour




Joiner will do oK, prob aroung the 30 bucks an hour will get overtime though, mortgage advisor, you will definitely not get a job doing this without ozzie qualifications.




My husband is a plumber. He is getting anywhere between $20 to $35 per hour and we are told that is really good money for a plumber. A guy he works with gets $35.00 because he has his licence - but we think the wages don't go far - the cost of living seems a lot higher than in the UK, our shopping bill and rent alone take up his whole wage and then been told my daughter's braces will cost $6500 is just so out of our reach on his wages and good private health care wouldn't be covered by his wages either.

OH is a design engineer, primarily in Catia, for things such as aircraft vehicles satalites, air filters, tanks etc. Has mechanical engineering experience and HNC and a little production engineering.
He will have no problem finding work in WA or Qld - not sure about the rest of the country. Actually, in WA they will have his arm off.
Pay in WA would be at least $70/hr or $145kpa. In Qld it would maybe slightly less.


Electrical engineer in Perth - $150-250k. Slightly less in Qld. A lot less in NSW, Vic and SA.

For those IT Procurement/purchasing Managers (Sydney)

When I left Sydney in 2005 I was a IT Supplier & Contracts Manager for a Telco earning $95K plus bonus of approx $8K. The role was a mix of a Procurement/Sourcing Manager in the UK (14 months in that role).
Before that I was IT Procurement Manager for a Denfence company looking after 14+ offices across Australia and was earning $90K plus bonus of approx $2K (14 months in that role)
Before that was Asia Pac IT Procurement Manager for a global bank, money was $75 plus bonus ranging from $10K - $20K (6 years in that role - could of gotten a big bump if I wanted when I got my new job offer but wanted a change)
Obviously this was a few years ago...but will give you an idea.

Been looking thru all the threads & can't seem to find anything on Mechanical Engineers. We are hoping to move to Perth later this year & we are trying to find out roughly what my hubands salary could be. He had an interview with Hoffmanns in Perth when we were out on holiday in Oct07 who have said there is a job there for him if he wants it but didn't mention the salary
He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has over 6 years work experience in quality here in the UK. Any information would be great!

First Class Welder at the moment can vary quite a bit and will continue to do so in the resources sector. Where I work first class welders are on $26 an hour more if you have duel capabilities as a welder/fitter. This is Brisbane, although I know others who are on less and some on more. Out west it can vary just as wildly if you have other certificates, pressure welding for example.



Award wage for panel beaters is $32,000 per year. I stress this is the award and I have seen figures of between $40K - $55K depending on experience. Look outside the traditional job sites, as these ones are the ones most people go to and thus they get swamped with applications. Do a specific search and spend some time looking for little gems. e.g


Me - Podiatrist 65k + super + 22k salary packaging
OH - Nurse 48k + super + salary packaging

I'm a Mechanic in Sydney and to be fair the skills shortage is a joke I work wih guys that are all under 20 live at home and once qualified leave the trade they know the money sucks, Hence the shortage, Still even with 15 years under my belt, Qualifications from various manufactuers and BTEC's etc. etc. I still had to pay and prove my abilities, This is after proving to the TRA I was skilled to gain my visa, Plus I had to get a trades licence.I have another friend who flew out after me Another mechanic he is off after a month the wages and the cost of living are unrealistic, Sydney is not the place if your a mechanic !!!
