IT jobs in Perth
Hi,
I'm considering a move west away from the busy-busy, expensive-expensive life in Sydney.
How is the IT job market in Perth? I have 18 years industry experience in both technical and managerial roles, mostly in financial services. I'm open to long term contract or permanent.
I've been on Seek looking and it certainly comes behind Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (in that order) in terms of number of jobs available.
- Is IT a growth market at the minute in Perth?
- Are there many IT jobs in the mining industry? - are they usually city based? do you need prior mining experience?
- Is the contract market bouyant?
Look forward to your replies.

Hiya, firstly perth is just as expensive as sydney without some of the perks, but it definetly has less of a busy, hussle lifestyle and less people. Thats a double edged sword though, yes its nice to get more space and see less people but that means theres less events and less to see and do.
IT wise there are quite a few jobs, however there are not many large corporations in perth. There are a few obvious ones like the banks and universitys, both of which I have worked for but a lot of the IT work is for small outsourcing solutions style companies that service the small and medium sized buisnesses that are more common in perth.
So if you like contracting for a 'solutions provider' or consultant firm then theres lots of that. Otherwise try the universitys and banks.
I would recomend a 2 week holiday in perth first so you can get the feel for it before heading over. Some people love it, some hate it

(I know the income would also be down.)
Consultancy would be perfect as that is what I've done for most of my career. Consulting to large and small business.
Can you suggest any consulting companies in particular? My background is in microsoft development technologies in particular .Net, and various BPMS platforms.

I can't help with personal knowledge of IT agencies, or the specialist terminology, but there are a lot websites to look at to give you a better idea, eg
- Chandler Macleod http://www.chandlermacleod.com/default.aspx
- My Career www.mycareer.com.au
- IT2 http://www.it2.com.au/it-jobs/perth/
- Job Serve http://www.jobserve.com.au/Perth/Wes...ia/IT/Jobs.htm
- Westjobs http://westjobs.com.au/jobseeker/jobs-in-perth.html
- Universities: usually advertise jobs on their websites, eg Murdoch www.murdoch.edu.au - other unis are UWA, Edith Cowan (ECU), Notre Dame (ND) and Curtin.
- You can also contact the HR or IT people at major companies to see if they use a particular agency.
- There also seem to be a few IT jobs on Gumtree http://perth.gumtree.com.au/f-Jobs-c...0QQCatIdZ18344

Re: IT jobs in Perth
I would recomend seek.com.au thats where I always found the majority of jobs.
As for agencys, theres a lot and they are all pretty much the same to be honest. Just be careful who you give refrence contact details to as I had some agencys ring my refrences, dropping my name, simply to drum up more buisness for themselves.
As for rent, I have been paying 340 a week for a 3 bedroom house with no garden and small garage thats about 20 minutes from the city, so thats a bit more expensive that your sydney place.
The further you go from the city the cheaper and bigger the houses get, the only tricky thing is deciding if you want to be north or south of the river. If you go north then get a job in the south, like my last one was its a pain getting over the bridges at peak times.
A lot of IT jobs are in the city centre (except universitys).
Hope that helps

www.talentinternational.com.au are the most established specialist IT recruiter in Perth. Consultants know their stuff & will advise.
