hi i am coming over to cairns in july on a years working visa with my girlfriend i am a fully qualified carpenter/joiner and she is a fully qualified nursery nurse we were just wondering how easy or hard it is going to be for us to find jobs in that area. Also if you think we are reli going to struggle to find jobs there can you advise us on any other part of oz where will find decent work.

Cairns has one of the highest unemployment rates in Australia and work prospects are made harder by backpackers working below minimum wage/for accommodation only. I'd seriously try and settle somewhere else but visit Cairns on a holiday as it is lovely. Work would be much easier to find in major cities - Perth, Brisbane etc If you are set on Queensland then the areas with work are probably Mackay and Gladstone - yet these are expensive and very much 'working towns'.

Was there a reason you picked Cairns? If you throw up some criteria you're looking for then we can throw up some other suggestions.

Completely agree with TE, job situation in Cairns is dire especially for trades, even with the number who have left Cairns to seek work elsewhere.
Consider elsewhere please!

Thanks for the advice looks like Brisbane it's going to be do you guys recommend anywhere in Brisbane close to the sea that's nice to start ?

I personally don't really know Brisbane.
Have you tried using the advanced search facility? There is heaps of info on the site, you just need to spend some time looking.
