jobs in cairns?
hi, im looking to possibly emigrate in 2 years, once i have finished my part time day release honours degree in M&E building services engineering. ill have 10 years experience in the field plus the all important degree certificate, and according to the immigration authorities my job is in demand and scores 60 points.
lately ive been doing a lot of forward planning and research on the various locations in oz, and their pro's and cons. currently i really like the sound of cairns, as it sounds similar(ish) to the current coastal resort i live in..... well without the sun, tropical rainforest and cyclones anyway! also i like the relaxed way of life, nice climate, plenty of outdoor fun, wildlife and the value for money housing (at the moment!)
i have signed up with various uk employment agencies that specialise in sending folk to oz, but the majority of work is in melbourne, sydney, perth, brissie..... there doesnt seem to be much/anything in cairns. i believe though, that cairns is undergoing a huge development, and there is to be a lot of construction work taking place over the next few years? is this correct? also, girlfriend is a teacher, should she find work ok?
any thoughts/advice would be appreciated greatly.

I'm a layman so what is it you actually do ? They may call it something else here.
Check out this site. This company is very busy and seem to be expanding in Cairns.

Cairns is expanding so schools will also increase.
Check out this forum as I have read previous threads about teachers having to go through some hoops before getting work.

I've been speaking to everyone else in your absence
Yep, Cairns is getting bigger. Seem to be building everywhere.
Big estates gone up out the back of Bentley right around to the back of Edmonton and down to Sugarworld.
Forest Gardens still growing.
From Brinsmead heading for Lake Placid the left hand side is new estates with shopping centre right over to the old Redlynch Village.
Redlynch Valley Estate is spreading out.
Smithfield ski park has a big one just underway and also the opposite side of the road across from the shopping centre.
Big one going up opposite side of the road to Clifden.
Kewarra continued to expand.
Trinity likewise.
Kanimbla and Park Ridge still going strong.
Hell, you name it and there's houses going up.
They just started releasing land at Gordonvale.....intend joining it up with Edmonton with another new shopping centre going up down there.
The Smithfield centre is almost complete after a several million $ upgrade.
One or two new hotels going up in town but low rise.
The big one at the marine end of the pier car park is nearing completion at last.
Haven't seen your other posts but will track them down
Gill says hello and will drop you an email.
Blimey, that's news indeed. Don't come back unless you can drive though
Not hijacking this thread...just explaining about all the building work going on.

Re: jobs in cairns?
Nobody more crackers than Bix!! I think its asylum valley up there so at least theyll be plenty of work for you!! Heaven help what the lioncubs will turn out like! My sister lives in Port Douglas....that was the real reason we found the way to nowhere! As soon as we landed there....it just felt so friendly! Sounds really odd but everyone we met was kind and chatty exactly what we are after. PLUS the place is totally beautiful! I am trying to keep it a secret though....Bix keeps blabbing his big mouth off about the place! For it to be so green and nice you do need the rain and I suppose you do need to put up with the rough to get the smooth!! Carnt wait to be drinking bottles of Wolf Blass on the verandah looking out accross the green of the rainforest!!! Before fighting the crocodiles out of the pool!

Re: jobs in cairns?
thanks for the info. that GHD multinational company looks interesting, and right up my field.
can you please also advise on the nice areas and surrounding suburbs, ideally close to the beach. ive seen kerrawa beach, palm colve, machans beach, trinity beach, clifton beach which all sound nice and a close commute to cairns, but can you offer your opinions on these areas. also house prices, size of burbs etc, thanks!
