Hi and welcome
I dont think you will have any difficulties with getting a visa, but you might struggle with a 457 as it tends to be more white collar and medical proffesions that get them, though occaisionaly trades people do and its worth a try, though do be careful of the restrictions these visas have - if you lose your job you have 28 days to find not only another job but someone to sponser you or leave the country.

I agree with Amazulu - if you have the qualifications it is much better to come over on PR. My hubby is a welder and we came on a 457, you are tied to a company for a minimum of 2 years whether you like the company or not and that is assuming that they will put you forward for ENS!! Not sure if you have kids but if so you miss out on family allowance, claiming back tax on school books etc. It may take longer to get PR from the UK but knowing what we know now we would have waited.

I realise there are restrictions, small price to pay. Want to find out if anyone knows if you start lodging permanant residency and still look for sponsorship would this be possible to head over on the onewhilst the PR is being processed?
Secondly how did people approach gaining 457, the reason we ask this we know it takes up to 2 years for PR! We want to head that way as we are currently living in South Africa and dont want to do 2 moves if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the feedback so far

Re: Jobs for 457
I'm flying out on the 6th Sept to start a new job in Melbourne. The company I'll be working for have sponsored me for a 457 visa and made the whole process very painless. The visa was granted in just ten days!
I am aware of the restrictions of the 457, but there are advantages. Such as LAFHA

Re: Jobs for 457
Ask away
I'm a civil engineer (although I studied mechanical engineering at Uni) working in railway design. The new job should be pretty similar to what I'm used to in the UK, but working on larger projects (one of the key decision makers for my move abroad).
A work colleague gave me the contact details of a recruitment agent in Sydney. So I made contact and after a few calls/emails regarding my aspirations and qualifications etc, she had a string of interviews lined up with various consultancy firms. I limited my choice by specifying Melbourne, but if I was to make the move it had to be on my terms.
Then it was a case of early morning telephone interviews. The norm for the roles I was applying for seemed to be two interviews, approximately an hour at a time, with the prospective company. The first was a 'getting to know you' type interview and the second another 'getting to know you' with more senior interviewers, i.e. director level. I was expecting to be grilled on my technical knowledge, but it was more about the softer skills.
There were recruitment seminars here in the UK a while back with the opportunity to have face to face interviews, but I was only just starting to consider the idea of a move then.
It sounds like your vocations is skilled and pretty specialist, which could help you find a sponsor. The agency I went through was Randstad, who are very well known all over and are always looking for skilled workers.
The agency has made the whole process straight forward and have been able to answer any questions I've had. However, in hindsight I could have probably negotiated a better package by applying directly to companies. But knowing there was someone to guide me through the process has been invaluable
Might be worth googling up recruitment agencies for your particular line of work and see what comes up.
Good luck!

The job you got lucky with, was it through an agency or direct through a company? Also, did you tell them up front on all you applications that you would need to be sponsored or did you wait for an initial reply?

Re: Jobs for 457
I have had no hassle, no uncertainty as I came here knowing its only Temporary, and in the long run I value a 'try before you buy' approach.
Also, PR may not be available for all so in that case if 457 is an option that is a good foot in the door.

Like any role you accept if it is not for you then you can leave at any time. The difference with 457 is that if you do so then you need to get another 457 sponsor ASAP. The rules state 28 days but a colleague of mine was extended for 3 months. If you have not settled and want to go back to UK you can at any time, however the cost is to yourself and you MAY have to reimburse the companys original costs to bring you over, however, in the 5 instances I have witnessed this it was not done.
As for 'missing out', yes you do not get family allowance, school books claims (???) etc, but, you are eligible for LAFHA which can be worth about $2000 in your pocket if worked out correctly.
Also, why assume they will put you forward for ENS??? It is not a given by either party that you will stay and really the whole purpose is purely to temporarily fill a gap that they have. Once they have in country skilled persons then they no longer require you. Thats how it works and I for one totally understand that.
