Default jobhunting nightmare

Been living in Brisbane for 4 months now and still cannot find work. I worked in the Uk for the NHS in a specialist area but seems almost impossible finding anything like it here, it was my partner who is a hairdresser who got us the visa. I've applied for about 30 jobs now in just about every area without luck. One was for a part time dogsbody in a care home on minimum wage (can you tell i'm desperate) where I was grilled for 45 mins by no less than 3 interviewers, and I still didn't get the job, apparently they were interviewing all week too. Like Kevin Keegan once said 'It's not like it said in the brochure'. Thats my current view of oz, living on one wage of 33k isn't much fun. Giving up everthing for this mmmmmmm

Only 30 jobs in 4 months, you don't sound too desperate

You're a deep well of sympathy aren't you?!!

OP - I had a hard time finding work too when I first arrived, in the end I took a contract job that was junior to what I had been doing and on significantly less pay to get a foot in the door.

I'm still doing contract work, and still on less money that I was in England, but that's a different story

I'm not sure what to say, apart from my sympathies to you. I know from reading this place that there are a lot of people who report the same and then all of a sudden, they land a job. Fraser, I think, was one. There are others.

Just keep plugging away.. and in the meantime, can you get any local TAFE courses to keep you busy or help your CV at all? It also might help to do some voluntary work esp in the field you want to work in...

I don't know if you're using an agency to get work, but that might be a route pursuing.
Have you had any feedback on why you're not getting the jobs? What do they say?

I'm really sorry it's so shite for you but hang in there... something will happen.

Like the others said, don't give up. It took my OH about 3.5 months to find the perfect job for himself, but in the end he found one. I agree it is tough living on 1 wage, especially when it's not great. We've been doing it for a while now and I can hardly wait for him to start work again.
Roll on Melbourne and January 8th.

Didn't mean to offend, he's saying he's applying for all areas, I just didn't think it sounded a vast amount of applications in that length of time.
A lot of people on here will have sent that many off in week.

I do sympathise, it's very hard. We've been here nearly 5 months and my son who has just turned 18 can't get a job, and he has tried loads and signed up for agencies, who do nothing. I spoke to a woman at the Job Network Provider today who said it was probably his age the fact that he doesn't have an Australian education that is the problem! What crap! He's willing to do anything, and he's now mumbling about going home which we don't want to happen. TAFE is not an option he didn't really enjoy school. He has applied for several apprenticeships which we're waiting to hear from.
It's no fun having a teenager hanging around the house I can tell you.
What happened to Australia needing new young blood to fill the skills shortages in years to come?

What specialist area are you in?
I am in the healthcare industry supply side but looking to get into the healthcare arena proper. Been trying for 12 months now and it isn't easy.

Hi Bookie

Why isn't TAFE an option? It's not like school.
