Hi Everyone
I have just been looking at jobs for hubey in oz news papers just to get a rough idea of what is required over their (as he is a self employed bricklayer in the uk,) but on the oz job page's they are asking for ABN can any one please let me know what this means.

Hi I'm a brickie & I asked the same question a few months back.Apparently it's the same kind of thing as the tax certificate we have over here with the photo on it (SC.. something or other). Do you know what kind of traning we have to do (if any) to become an 'Australian style Brickie' ? ,Because I've been told that in order to become a Bricklayer out there,I have to do a certain amount of training once I get there. Make sure you are aware of the training you will need to do, even if you are the best brickie in the UK you still need an Australian license. Same goes for site supervisor/Foreman, that also needs specialist Aussie training.

Not being negative, just trying to offer a bit of advice as there are always a lot of posts especially from electricians upset that they need to go back to college to obtain an Aussie electrical licence.

we arrived in melbourne 5 months ago, my hubbie is a brickie, he got work as a brickie within 2 weeks of arriving. we literally took the yellow pages and went through it phoning every builder in it asking for a job!
they've never asked to see any refs, qualifications or anything. they basically gave him a days trial, realised he could do the work and offered him the job!
an abn number is like a cis card, hubbie did no training what so ever out here, the aussies do things a little different but you will pick that up as you go along!

If you are self employed or a subby u need a ABN

Apply for one when you get here with ATO i think its www.ato.gov.au

Someat liek that

Its just a Tax File Number

Simultaneously your ABN becomes your GST number similar to VAT

EACH month you fill a GST return in, and send off a cheque.

Its all very very easy to do, and you actually feel good for being upfront and legit

However he may also need a QBSA license if he is gonna work on othe ppls homes for himself.

I think the current limit is 1100 bucks job value or less to miss the pre requisite.
