In general I think he should be OK. But it will depend on the field he is in and his adaptability. And make sure you go somewhere with demand for his skills, don't go to the Gold Coast or Sunshine coast etc. It makes a big difference in what he brings home! Depending on his field he should prepare himself for things being a bit different here. They like to keep things simple, not always cutting edge(but there are exceptions).
There's been some other discussions around here lately about the skill shortage, don't generalize that. In my view the only real shortage is engineers and other really specialized disciplines. As an example, my company could easily find 180 "skilled" people off the street to weld together plates. In a week we are done with that project, and our company pretty much tells them to piss off. But finding someone educated to calculate, design and draw what those guys are doing is very hard. When we find those people we employ them permanently.

Applied for 3 jobs in Qld, got 2 went for the highest paid one, now I never see my husband anymore, as there is so much jobs going into his company, 24 hours a day is too short.
Just make sure, you start off with the right state, you could save yourselves so much money & time.

Re: Job Prospects for Mechanical Engineers
It's not all about the mining. I work for a consultancy in Melbourne and we're crying out for good quality engineers, mechanical and process particularly. On my side it's the water industry that's desperate - the wages aren't the same as for the mines in WA, so I guess that could be part of the prob. PM me if you want more details.

Re: Job Prospects for Mechanical Engineers
We visited Perth last year & my OH was offered a job with an engineering company in Bassendean. Can anyone give any info as to whether mechanical Engineering jobs are still in demand or is the credit crunch affecting jobs in this field?

Might be a bit tougher now with a few less jobs on the market. If you have a good background you'll probably be ok, but the salaries id say are not so silly as before. Id say you have to be here too - theres no way they will offer you one whilst you are abroad at the moment.

I think that's quite a good summary and certainly the situation in our company which is outside mining.
