Melbourne.

Brisbane market would be about 10 - 20% the number of IT jobs of Melbourne market, and normally lower salaries too. There are IT jobs in Brisbane, but if you want the best opportunity of getting your first IT job in Australia, head for Melbourne or Sydney.

Definitely Melbourne. My DH works in IT here in Brisbane but there aren't a huge amount of IT jobs to be had.

I am a technical writer in the IT industry and I am leaving Sydney for Brisbane.

However, if you are aiming for most jobs go Melbourne...though Sydney probably has th emost.

just to add a bit of rigour to my answer :)

Very rough comparison from March this year using a methodology I made up on the spot:

Population from wikipedia:

Sydney: 4,504,469
Melbourne: 4,000,000
Brisbane: 2,004,262
Perth: 1,658,992

An example searching for ".net" in seek:

Sydney: 1013 (4446 people per .net mention)
Brisbane: 251 (7985 people per .net mention)
Melbourne: 469 (8528 people per .net mention)
Perth: 89 (18640 people per .net mention)

An example searching for "java" in seek:

Sydney: 2054 (2193 people per java mention)
Melbourne: 974 (4106 people per java mention)
Brisbane: 439 (4565 people per java mention)
Perth: 190 (8731 people per java mention)

So per head of population in two mainstream areas Sydney is well in front, Melbourne and Brisbane seem in the same ball park, Perth way behind. I'll have to give my new scale a name...I can only imagine the suggestions ;)

Oooo and OP, another thing to consider might be lifestyle or type of City.

I have never been to Melbourne but from what I have heard from family and friends who have been to all 3, they are all very different!

Nice one. You could still improve this if instead of using the city population you used the number of .Net/java programmers living in that city.
Is there any official document about population distribution by occupation in Australian cities? :)

Of that I have no doubt.

On a sort of related note I am now offically retiring from trying to give technical IT advice on BE. I'll stick to knob gags from now on.

If the ungrateful cnuts can't be bothered to acknowledge me then **** 'em.

Apologies for grumpiness, I'm going back to Test Match Special and happiness :)
