Not sure but I don't think what she's achived (or not actually as she didn't go far enough) warrants Jessica Watson day in Australia today! I appreciate she's only 16 but Ellen McArthur has done way more.

Not being funny but I've never even heard of her? Who is she?

She's the Australian girl who is due to arrive back in Sydney today (I think) after trying to sail solo around the world. She's not done it though because she's not gone far enough North. Today has been declared Jessica Watson day though

If she wasn't a rich kid she will be now with all the money she will make selling her stroy l wouldn't be suprised if she makes atleast $1m. l guess we will be hearing nothing else expcept her in the media for the next week. What l'm worried about is some 14 or 15 year old girl will now try to beat her record as the youngest person to sail round the world and end up getting killed.

That's one of the reasons she won't make it into the record books officially, she's under 18 so her record won't be recognised. The other of course is that her registered course fell short of the required distance. Even prior to her departure Jessica's course router was well aware that her course would fall short of the WSSRC's RTW minimum distance.
I agree with your reasoning in so far as parents will strive for their child to become the youngest. Won't be long before someones has a misadventure. Crikey if a seasoned sailors like Tony Bullimore & Chay Blithe can come to grief a youngster with only a few years blue water experience is going to be extremely vulnerable.
That said Jessica will have sailed around the world a phenomenal achievement for a 16 yr old. Shame the guy that plotted her course for her didn't take into account the WSSRC's RTW minimum distance. He failed her it was his responsibility.

Have to disagree here. As the Captain of the vessel she should have known full well the distances required, especially as she would have (should have) plotted the navigation course herself.

Re: Jessica Watson

The media is calling her a hero, a hero is someone who risks their life to help others, she risked her life to achieve fame and fortune for herself she did'nt do it to rasie money for charity or anything.

Re: Jessica Watson

Yes, she risked her life for her own gain. She didn't risk her life to save someone else. That's not a hero.

Well I for one think what she has done is great, let her have her moment of fame. Its no different to climbing everest or any of the other things people have aims for in life. At least she gets off her ass and does something unlike a lot of the teenage population. She deserves a warm welcome back.

What she did was something most other 16 years old have never/will never do. It was an adventure for her. Nothing more, nothing less. However it certainly doesn't deserve the media attention it is getting or 'Jessica Watson Day' and all the fanfare in Sydney. Category 1 event? You've got to be joking...

It's amazing what people can do if they have the money to do the things they want.

Where and by whom? They must be keeping it pretty quiet, because you're the first person I've heard it from.
