It's raining cats & dogs....
Well, we've arrived - and brought much-needed rain with us. It's absolutely belting down, cold and windy too. Just like home....
After nearly a week in a Travelodge we have finally managed to get a furnished apartment on a 6 month lease, allowing us to look around for a house to buy. Got screwed on the apartment, but there we are.
Thanks to posts here, we have bought a "Click" phone card: fantastic value if a little longwinded phoning the UK and USA- a 15 minute call to the UK cost 53c or about 20p! Plus the local call to get into the system.
The housing market around Sydney seems to be relatively soft now, with quite a few unsold properties at auction. With the election only a week away it's anybody's guess as to the interest rates next month so people are probably wary of committing themselves too much.
Roll on summer!

Glad you made it !
Where abouts in Sydney are you ?? You mention it took a week to get an apartment. Does that include the time until you could move in? Just wondering how long to book our holiday let for when we first arrive

Re: It's raining cats & dogs....
hmmm, click phone card, sounds like the one we got ( no idea of the name, sorry ).Got it at the hsbc branch, bit like a credit card, cost something like 20 or 40 cents (cash into the phone)to use but then you could gab for ages for next to nothing on the card. An absolute MUST for new arrivals in my opinion.
Sorry to hear about your weather, we got the same deal, first day here, loads of lightning in the morning followed by the first rain in four months.

Welcome to Oz Rog.
One of the cheapest methods to call the UK is to buy an OzTalk token.
We've been here 6 weeks now and point $30 4 weeks ago and we still have about $4 left. We have phoned the UK for 1hr at a time 2 or 3 times a week (sometimes more). It costs about 1.2c a minute apparently.
You can buy it at most big Newsagents and in a lot of cases they have a guide that shows you which ones are the best value for money.
On the subject of rain, we are up in Brisbane and I am beginning to forget what it looks like. The rain in the summer is spectacular though apparently.
