Question It's grim Up North... how many Northeners in Aus now?

It's grim Up North in the UK however, i'm finding it quite pleasant overall Up North in Aus...

so how many Northerners are in Aus now?

where have you settled?

and are you enjoying it?

I'm originally from Easington Village in Co. Durham on North East Coast of UK between Newcastle/Sunderland and Hartlepool (for those that don't know where that is).

Yes being a monkey hanger must have been grim. But this said it's lovely in North Yorkshire, so glad I moved away from Teesside. BIG generalisation to say all Northern England is grim as it isn't!
Wouldn't go to Northern Aus for all the tea in China but glad you're enjoying it!

You're a southerner

Is pretty grim where he/she used to live, I'd have moved if I had have lived there. Would probably have tried other areas of England 1st, rather than the usual don't like it here so I'm of to Australia theme :scared:

I used to go on holiday to my mate's family in Ashington when I was a kid (Over 40 years ago ). we used to go to Whitley Bay, Blyth. Newbiggin etc.

I lived in Oxford then and thought it was really cool up north

Okey Dokey

We will be up on the sunshine coast for a while.

Not sure how long we are staying yet but want to have a good look round.

We are looking for somewhere reasonably close to Brisbane but have not been there for a few years.

Points of order:

I lived in Co. Durham not Hartlepool so hanging monkeys doesn't come into it and it was much more industrial in Teeside where you say you used to live near. Where I used to live Easington Village is a farming village with green fields and nice countryside but Grim Up North was a common UK saying used tongue in cheek... .

Even though I did joke about Grim Up North can't remember ever saying I moved because I didn't like the UK as I did and liked where I lived, even the more industrial surrounding areas, I moved because I wanted to experience somewhere different and new challenges. Moving in UK would not have apealed as there was no where I fancied and overall it would have just gave me more of the same UK experiences.

I do live on the North side of Brisbane and unless I have my map upside down we are lot further North than Melbourne or Adelaide etc. if not as far as Darwin... .

The name Ann in the user name implies I may well be female... .

Back to the thread...

Yes have had many happy days out at Whitley Bay although just passed through the others.

To get back on track this wasn't supposed to be a UK/Aus bashing thread there's plenty of others for that(although fond memories of UK allowed), the main gist of the thread was supposed to be:

so how many Northerners are in Aus now?

where have you settled?

and are you enjoying it?

I'm originally from Easington in Co. Durham on North East Coast of UK between Newcastle/Sunderland and Hartlepool (for those that don't know where that is).

We moved from Whitby (for the Southerners that's on the North Yorkshire coast just south of Teesside) to bayside Brisbane....and, being honest, we are struggling to find anything of note (other than family) that we miss too much or don't like

This part of the world is just as pretty ( in its own way) as the North York Moors.....the people are just as friendly and as down to earth as they are in Yorkshire and, very importantly for us, it is considerably warmer!

Plenty of places around Noosa to stay or you could try Caloundra if you want to be closer to Brisbane.

Could always have a big Sunshine Coast meet while you are there.

Well I'm from Manchester and am presently on the south side of Brisbane and I think it's brill. Not 100% settled yet though been here 15 months cos still waiting to move into my own home. Hopefully another month and it should be finished. Also hubby needs to get a permanent job. I think I underestimated how long it takes to feel at home. However went shopping on saturday and bumped into someone I know. That used to happen all the time in the UK. You were sure to meet someone in Tesco (and always when I looked a fright!)

Quite agree about the considerably warmer... .

We use to go for fish & chips in Whitby now we go to Scarborough. Like you we mainly miss family and some small silly things but find there are so many favourable things about Australia that we have still settled well.

We find a lot of the hillsides around here are very similar to where we lived, especially the bits with rolling hills with cows and although the mountains are different to the Lake District they can be just as impressive in their own way.

I have stayed in Noosa before (4/5 years ago).

We are also looking for somewhere to live.

If there is a meet around that time we may well turn up
