It would be extreme granted. As it would be an expensive exercise all round with the cost to surrounding business etc, but it could be a cost a government on the ropes, in a many of speaking is prepared to take.
Nothing like creating an emergency to harness support and drown out bad news.
I'm not saying it is but I have lived in other cities in siege situations and something points this to being played out for all it's worth.
Why not close the immediate area and get on with business? Why so far afield has been impacted?
Just a few thoughts on the matter at hand.

Playing right into this lunatics hands with all of this media coverage.
I'm fairly hopeful it will all turn out quite well in the end. However from his point of view Mission accomplished... inasmuch as others will be more motivated and a certain amount of trepidation instilled into the general populace.
If this was a exercise which it clearly isn't, that would mean the downfall of the NSW government for allowing such a thing to happen under their watch.
Reporting back on my walk back through Coburg, didnt notice anything significantly different, may have been less Muslim women around not completely sure.

Interesting reactions in Oz, I know of some companies getting staff out or advising against travel to Sydney. I guess being Brits we are more aware of situations like these and dealing with them both from the authorities and personally.
I got caught up in an IRA bombing in Oxford St many, many years ago, it was flipping scary. In those days there was no internet or mobile phones to find out what was going on or let anyone know how I was progressing with trying to get out of London! Although I try not to let these situations bother me, it did leave a scar or two especially as I had walked past the bomb site an hour or so before it went off.
Lets hope it ends soon with no loss of life but it will be interesting to see how everyone goes about their daily business from now on. They have said the location was likely picked for maximum impact but unusual for the gunman not to have had any communication with the authorities.

...if it's absolutely clear that he isn't wearing a suicide vest or has a buddy with an AR pointing at someone's head.

There are reports tonight that there are two men, one with a backpack containing a bomb and another with a gun - so many conflicting stories, who knows.

What happened to the rumour that they were asking to speak with Tony Abbott on live radio? Or was that MSM at it's best?

Re: It's going down in Sydney
Yeah, that rumour is going around everywhere - Channel 7 or 10 said they had had a call demanding an Isis flag and to speak directly to Tony Abbott.

Also, I appreciate the picture was not the best but how have we not identified this guy yet? I guess biometric scanning at traffic lights for all is next on the list.

I've seen a couple of people on FB say they will be avoiding Sydney.
Not me, I will be up there a lot over Christmas.
We should never give in to terrorism!

They're waiting for a contingent of Qld Police to arrive, they've had loads of practice at shooting baddies this past few weeks
