I started with Bigpond 1500 speed, 12Gb download limit at $70. They have reduced some of their basic packages but as we are now downloading UK TV off the net I am up to 20000 speed (in theory! - 3000 in practice cf 500 before as there is only ADLS not ADSL2+ at our exchange) with 25Gb capacity at $100pcm and even considering moving up to 60GB capacity at $150, put trying to avoid that. We are in Carramar, north Perth.

SW WA
Use Westnet, currently on their up to 8Mb/ 10gb download package, costs $89.95 / month.
There are probably cheaper but I've always found their customer service outstanding so loathe to change

Internode and iinet are usually the ones recommended by techie people.
Watch for two year contracts or excessive charging if you go over your limits.
International speed can be slower than you are used to in the UK, and limits are way lower.
You may also be caught out by no ports being available, or rim type mini-exchanges which may block your adsl applications.
Better value comes in if you can get onto adsl 2+ isp owned equipment, but many places lack it or availablity.
This is a good site for availablity

Not yet, and for most ISP , uploads are not counted in the traffic limits. Your speed will be limited by Australia limited connections to the rest of the world.
Bare ADSL is just starting here ( No phone tone ) as phone lines cost $25-30 a month line rental, and are good if you don't actually use your home phone. I think iinet are charging uploads for bare line

iinet's version is called Naked DSL - you don't need a phone line with Telstra/Optus which saves you upwards of $30 per month
As you correctly said, uploads count towards your quota with Naked DSL (unlike iinet's other tarifs - at the moment!) so not much use if you're into torrent/P2P, but good for 'ordinary' users

One thing that people havn't mentioned here is having WIRELESS broadband.
Vodafone for example $39 per month and 5GB allowance. You can buy more if you need it.
You go into your local mobile shop, buy the modem there and sign up. Walk out and plug it into your computer and your online with broadband. (Check your coverage if you are out in the back of whoop whoop obviously). Time taken is that actually required for you to drive to shop and get back home.

I strongly believe this is now the way forward and am finding less and less of a reason to actually possess a landline.

We are with Bigpond & signed up for the 24 month contract (been with them a yr so far), but now want to switch to wireless (poss Vodaphone, looking at the link), does anyone know what the penalty is for breaking our contract with BigPond?
Thanks

If you cancel your BigPond Broadband ADSL service, the cancellation fee is $360 pro rated for the months remaining on your contract term.
For example, a BigPond Member who cancels their contract 9 months into a 12 month contract may have to pay a termination fee of $360 x 3/12 (where 3 is the number of months left to run on the contract, divided by 12 months) = $90.

Re: ISP Who? how much? and how quick?
I spoke to Big Pond the other day as I have 24 month contract and only 15 months into it and I'm moving (I have cable). I asked if the next landlord wouldnt allow me to have cable installed would it be poss to have wireless an apparently if you stay with BigPond for any of their services, they wave the break of contract fee
