Interviews, stress and so on...

Happy new year all..!!!

3 months now, many interviews, some not even a call back, some others to second interviews but nothing concrete yet. My wife; less but quite promising interviews so far.. We are terrified as we see our account going down dramatically in our face.

We use to apply from low to high range positions (70 to 120k) as everybody tell us to start from the bottom in order to get local experience and so on..

Lately, we have been quite sad, unmotivated and stressed out for not saying a bit depressed.. Its suppose that I'll start a part-time MBA to upgrade my last degree (and to be active and occupied), but now, the company of my wife is insisting and taking care of all the sponsorship paperwork (without any commitment yet) for her to go back to London to keep working with them. Kind of crazy after all the investment of coming here (and how much I like here) but now we are seeing it as an escape route if things don't go well here.

We used to be clear in our vision and decisions but lately we feel in a limbo..

Anyone have passed for the same as us, any honest advise that may make us feel a bit better?

Cheers

That must be so hard for you both. If you are free to work anywhere and in any profession then it is worth remembering that you are more employable when you are employed.

Is there anything else at all that you could turn your hand to - anything? Even on a lower salary, just to get yourself employed and your confidence up?

I can imagine that it feels like a very long time, but it really isn't that long particularly considering the holiday season. You must have expected at least a few months with only outgoings and nothing coming in. Are you able to fund a few more months? If you are otherwise happy here and have worked hard to get here, then maybe it is not time to give up yet.

Going back to UK could very well be the end of your Australian plans, so don't make that decision until you are ready. When I say it could be the end, I mean if you go back to London what would make you try Australia again in the future after this experience and what would be different.

Good luck, hope you get your break soon.

We are here under PR, the only thing I've heard around is an opportunity to work in a car rental washing cars and perhaps working in a kitchen in a restaurant.. Not precisely a confidence booster after all what we have invested in education and global experience (still in consideration though!)...

We can survive I guess six to nine months with a really (really) stretched budget.. the only extra cost now is a ultra cheap Yoga lessons (Groupon discount) for my wife to keep her occupied and to cope the stress..

More than the expenses is the time doing nothing that is driving me crazy and making really difficult for me to enjoy my free time without feeling productive...

Surely working to get any income is better than nothing whilst you job search?

Just having a job and an income can be a confidence booster; it also gets Aussie experience onto your resume. I worked as a mail sorter for Aus Post the first Christmas I was here, not the best job I ever had (nor the worst) but when I went for jobs afterwards I kept hearing that Aus Post were a good employer to have on the resume, and the very fact I was doing something rather than just surfing job sites all day made a big difference :)

That may be a silly question, but should I take things out my CV to make it more appealing to low wage roles or leave it like that and express my wiliness to accept any role?

Yep, tailor your resume to the jobs you apply for. They will be scared off if you apply for a job less than you are capable of.

Yes. Remove everything not relevant to the job you are applying for and don't let them realise you're not Aussie until you're in the interview. It's better to be working in ANYTHING than sitting around depressed. There are plenty of us in jobs well below our skill set and qualifications. Get stuck in to waitressing/bar work etc and you'll probably meet plenty of other migrants with MBAs and other degrees/ ex-careers. I know I have.... Chin up!

This is unfortunatly true. There are loads of professionals on the scrap heap over here but there's loads of jobs in the mines apparently:D

It took me 6 months to find work. Don`t ask me why but it did`nt stress me to much. With a wife and two kids it should of. I guess I knew something would turn up. I did start applying for just about anything. even asked a couple of agencies if employers don`t like us Poms. Could not understand it. I to had the interview, shown site, asked if I could cope. I said in all honesty all the kit is exactly the same as the last place I worked, just a different application. Never contacted me again. Hang in there! It will happen.

Are you in Sydney? There is plenty of call centre jobs advertised on gumtree and seek. Something to tied you over until something better comes along
