Internet when 1st arrive
When we 1st arrive in sydney we will have our laptop but not sure what my options are for gettin on the internet until we have a rental.
I've had a look on some of the websites and can get a dongle, but it looks like I have to sign up for a long period. Are there any pay as you go options? What about free wifi, any places in centre that do this like Wetherspoons do over here (if it's in a pub, all the better!!!):p |

There is also a grocers shop near the entrance that we used. |

Re: Internet when 1st arrive
You can get payg dongles quite cheaply - Virgin is around the $130 mark at the moment I think with about 300mb on it. Telstra are the most expensive but have the better coverage so it all depends on where you will be wanting to use it. You can check the coverage maps to see whether your area will be well covered. 3 are cheap but they only have central metropolitan coverage otherwise they roam expensively onto Telstra. You can get a nice range at Dick Smiths
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ is the place to go for internet coverage discussions, phones etc Maccas have free wifi spots these days so if you fancy living on bigmacs you should be fine! |
Re: Internet when 1st arrive
Like Quoll says you can always purchase a wireless dongle (3 do one and are probably the cheapest we have one and pay $39 per month for 6 gig but like Quoll says their coverage isn't great http://www.three.com.au/coveragechecker)
Unfortunately, there are no Wetehrspoons offering free wifi:( Have a look at this list it will tell you what is available: http://www.wififreespot.com/aus.html Kate:thumbsup: |
Re: Internet when 1st arrive
Thanks.
We're lookin at Hornsby or Miranda long term, so maybe Virgin maybe a good option. Any idea of the top up costs? I've had a look and can only find initial cost of dongle: https://www.virginmobile.com.au/shop...nProductID=388 Thanks again:thumbsup: |
Re: Internet when 1st arrive
I have a vodaphone dongle use it infrequently. Cost $129 on with 1GB memory included. Top up whenever you want. www.vodaphone.com.au. I've not had a problem with it uses 3G connection in metro areas and ADSL.

Re: Internet when 1st arrive
There is the very cheap option of signing up with a library - they have free access - (well in Brisbane they do so i guess NSW is the same)

Re: Internet when 1st arrive
If you are in the Hornsby area (great place to live) you will have no problem. Go to the food hall in the Westfield Shopping Centre, McDonalds have free wifi, 11 Mb connection with an effective transfer rate of about 1.2 Mb, would not be fantastic at home but for free it is OK. Will handle E-mails and browsing without any frustration, big downloads can be a bit tedious. Miranda probably has the same facilities.
If you do get to Hornsby and you are in the food hall early in the day, look out for an old fellah with a grey beard playing on a netbook not far from McDonalds, there most Fridays and sometimes other days whilst my wife goes to the gym. |
