Yes, they do charge a bit more, but not bad if you were travelling. I still have receipts from a very nice service apartment in Melbourne from last year, the local calls/internet dialups were $0.80 each, some calls were 1 minute, some over 2 hours, still the same one-off charge per call.

And it's a hell of a surcharge really. I think the actual rate is 22 cents!

Its actually really simple. all you need for broadband connection is a wifi card that you plug into the pcmiia slot in your laptop. This is about £30. When you get to a site with a hotspot it will be found automatically. Some hotels will charge others will not. Public places like airports normally do. If they charge a screen will come up on your laptop asking for credit card details. It may be slightly more expensive but it is convenient and saves going to an internet cafe and when you are stuck in Singapore airport for a few hours, it can be quite a relief

Beware of hotel/serviced apartments charging for use of dedicated fast data connections from the room, ie a separate line from the telephone. We stayed in the Medina Apartments in Brisbane and the info provided made it sound like there would expensive for the first 20 minutes then capped at $20 per day. It was in fact a cap of $20 per connection, ie every time you redialled it started charging again. It seemed like we weren't the only ones to complain but we only got part of the cost back.
They did make a big thing of only charging 80c for a local call so using the normal phone line would have been a much better option there.

Yikes that price is disgusting.
Another option is i-burst which currently has patchy coverage but worth a look for what will be the future.
Sydney only for the moment.
