Ok we have just signed up with a internet provider having used mobile broadband upto now.
Mobile is ok but you loose signal very easily especially during peak times, i.e schools out, holidays and early evenings.
Our connection as gone as low as 0.10kb

This thread is actually about the time spent while actually getting your new connection set up with any of the internet providers, 25 minutes in and then no thank you just good bye click burrrrrrrr

We understand they are working to instructions to sell extra packages and add ons all going towards there increased salary via the sales pitch, but it is so annoying to sit there that long, and all you want is home phone and broadband?

We signed up with iinet 6 years ago and are still with them. The sign up process was quick and easy and you didn't get sold stuff you didn't want. I bet you went with Helstra!

Lol Helen it's iinet all day long for us, we have read only good things overall about iinet and the service that they provide, it's just the long winded process of actually getting it all done and dusted so to speak.
It's now a five to ten day waiting period for connection, can you believe they actually offered us at a discount a modem/router for $200 We have seen them on sale at a store for $120 or less and they are good modem and router packages

Well it must have changed a lot then as we got a free modem (which only stopped working about 6 months ago) and the process was done in 10 minutes.

We wish it's all sales sales sales now my friend. Back in the UK we used sky for tv and the net it was a great service we had all the bits and bobs needed for net start up, over here you get the phone and broadband at one price and extras are just that extras?
Like i said earlier we can get the modem and router from office works with all cables and filters for under $120 and it's the exact same one we had in the Uk with sky, the netgear system.

Make absolutely sure that any replacement modem you buy can handle Multicast and MER IE IPTV... Thats the way TV is going in this Country.... Owise you may find you'll want to replace any modem you buy within 24 months.

It's one of the reasons why BOB is so expensive.

Another happy IInet user here. I dont have a BOB either and am waiting for a suitable router to come onto the market... the ones I'm looking at are dearer than BOB mostly because after one that can handle two seperate voip accounts and multicast and MER.

One specific reason you may want this is if you are a UK football follower the teams may well soon bring out their own live broadcasts of games via the net. It is in the pipeline. Especially at the Championship (Cocacola) level of teams.

The 5 to 10 day wait has always been the standard time. When we connected up with iinet some years back we were expecting 10 days but it took less than 7. The time is needed to physically swap out your copper wire connection from Telstra to iinet at your local exchange. It's really no big deal to have this one-off wait for the benefit thereafter - just use your mobile connection in the meantime and before you know it a week is up.

And are you sure you are comparing with a similar type of modem/router that iinet provide? The new BoB2 modem ($200) has 4 ports, wireless, built in voip (phone connection), DECT phone handset, answering machine, USB charge port for mobiles, FetchTV compatible, plus for the non-technical minded you will be using iinet's standard equipment so much easier for them to help you if you have any issues.

What similar modem are you going to get for under 200 bucks?

You can always call in the Bob Squad to help you out - I might need that soon, as I'm going to change over to wireless. We've been with iinet for years and have no plans to change ISP.

DGN1000 functionality is pretty basic in comparison, and is half the wireless speed (N150) of the BOB2.

I presume you're getting the iinet naked DSL i.e. VOIP phone package included? If so then the netgear doesnt have any voip ports so just to get that you'd have to spend another $60 or so, and is yet another device to power. Plus the BoB2 has fetchTV capability, phone included etc etc.

No voip and IInet provide that, so your losing function with that modem.

You have to get a modem with voip capacity owise you will pay through the nose for phone calls.

IE the Modem even BOB will pay for itself within 3 months just on the extra phone charges.

Pay 18 bucks on top of the IInet base rate and you have 100 pct of your phone calls covered here via Pennytel... as long as you use Voip... that includes mobiles (well 150 calls or 500 mins and ALL of your international calls) plus all local and national.

you could always get a second hand one for 50 bucks or so off of ebay.au... like so... That will do everything except for the IPTV...

Should be ok, although it's possible the Netgear router may not be compatible with IInets Naked connection (Non phone line connection hence 30 bucks cheaper per month) as per this ad.

Not sure what the difference in protocols is in a Naked v non Naked Modem. Other issue would be the possibility of no modem phone support from IInet... I'd phone IInet personally, they are a surprisingly approachable company tell them your bringing your own modem.

They Fixed a XBOX connection issue for me, which took at least 30 mins on the phone when they didnt have too. Turned out to be too low a MRN speed.

It's not a naked connection, it's a bog standard home phone/internet bundle with 20gb a month usage. We only use the phone very occasionally and the net for emails etc, O/H does his photo manipulation stuff so gets source images off net and the kids do what kids do on the net
There are two computers in the house one will be on the ethernet connection via phone socket and the other will be wireless connection, using the router (netgear)
