Do you need to apply for an international car license if you are hiring a car for your holiday?

Where are you talking about?
If UK citizen hiring a car in Oz, no, UK license is perfectly OK.

There is no such thing, although some countries may require you to have both your open licence and an International Driving Permit. http://www.mynrma.com.au/cps/rde/xch...rs_permits.htm

And even if you got one you still have to back it up by showing your original licence at the same time.

International licenses are simply not used much nowadays except when travelling though rather backward and interesting countries. And then, your license is probably the least of your worries
