Insurance Technicality - Please help

Hi Everyone,

My partner and I will be travelling to Australia to start our new life on a defacto spouse visa. We are stopping off in Thailand for a couple of weeks. We are wondering how to get travel insurance as we will technically not be a resident of either Ireland or Australia while on our holiday. It seems the travel insurance companies want to know which country you are resident in. We don't want to be caught out on a technicallity should we need to make a claim.

Any advice would be most appreciated.
Many thanks,
Holly

Well until you get to Oz you are still a resident of your last country but on holiday. That is how I would see it.

I would say you're resident in your home country until you arrive in Oz. You can't really be resident in Oz until you've actually arrived.

So, Ireland it is.

You should probably look at one way trip insurance. Most travel insurance specifies that you have to start and end trip in the same country (country of residence). There are several companies that specialise in one way insurance for people who are emigrating/going for long periods travelling/backpacking etc.

Do a google on "one way trip travel insurance" - but you may then have to ring them and explain your stop off to ensure you get proper cover.
