Default Insurance: "like for like" replacement of CRT TV in Australia

Hi all

I'm currently in, er, "discussions" with the insurers who covered our stuff when it was being shipped from the UK to WA. It looks like the shippers/handlers managed to damage our widescreen CRT TV, probably by dropping it (technically the shadow mask has been shifted). After a number of interesting and occasionally forthright emails have been exchanged, their current tactic is to ask me where it can be replaced on a like for like basis in WA (the policy covers us for "full replacement value at destination").

So here are two questions:
  • Anyone know a place in WA that might sell 32" CRT widescreen TVs (i.e., so that I can get a figure that can work as a "full replacement value"). Obviously, I know this is a long shot, since CRT TVs are pretty obsolete.
  • Anyone had to argue this sort of thing with an insurer before, where you're replacing equipment that's obsolete?

Thanks
b

K-Mart, I think, sometimes still sell CRT Televisions.
I know someone who bought one a few months back, but a 66cm was about $199

If I was you, I would ask the nearest specialist "expensive" TV store, and see what they can source for you.
It will probably be expensive, but then ...

I just had a thought about that part of the question, it wasn't a TV, but it was something else that was covered by Insurance, and it became a problem for me to replace it, so I insisted that the Insurer find the replacement for me, and it had to be the same quality or better.

The original cost was $5,000 and the replacement was going to be over $7,000 for 'exactly' the same thing, although newer products were much cheaper.

When they realised it would cost them $7,000, they offered me $2,500, which I took, as I could get a very similar newer item for that price.

Now that's an interesting idea... they've effectively set themselves up for this, as their most recent email said "we've been unable to find retailers offering 32" CRT TVs for £XYZ". In other words, it can be assumed they're already looking for retailers.

Actually, the full Ts&Cs for the cover, on their main website, don't say anything about "like for like", they say ...a sum equivalent to the cost of their repair or replacement...

Cheers
