My sister and her boyfriend are going to visit my brother in Melbourne in January and want to travel along the Great Ocean Road and end up in Adelaide.
Can you please give me some ideas of what to see/where to stay along the route? They have about 5 days to drive there and back again and want to visit the Barossa Valley too.

If they only have 5 days in total, and want to visit the Barossa, then forget the Great Ocean Road. It's at least 3 days Melbourne-Adelaide if you actually want to look at anything en route, with one night around Port Campbell-Warrnamboul and the second in Mt Gambier. Take the direct route through Ballarat-Horsham-Bordertown-Tailem Bend-Murray Bridge-Adelaide.

They could do the Great Ocean in 2 days, a couple of days in Adelaide & the Barossa, then the direct route back in a day - but all they'd be doing is driving, not actually seeing anything much.

Great Ocean Road 930km

And the Great Ocean road is very winding so takes a lot longer to drive than you'd think by looking at the distances.

And you'd be constantly stopping to look at all the sites, so add on another couple of hours as well.

Perhaps go along the Great Ocean Road, as it is a great trip to do, and forget about the Barossa, as there are loads of vineyards elsewhere, or is that sacrilege?
